On my Sub 37, if a CV at the PITCH CV IN is held constant, then it will not change until a different enough value is sent. This is undesirable for me because it prevents (small) vibrato or glide from the current note, coming from the external CV source. Is there a way to change this so that it responds to all pitch CV values right away?
Can anyone at least confirm that this behavior is “expected” rather than a defect of my unit?
Just for the record: I contacted both Moog Support and one of the original designers of the Sub 37, Amos Gaynes. It turns out that this behavior is inherent to the design, as there is a mechanism to protect against noisy signals both from the pots and the CV inputs. From Amos:
“…It sounds exactly like the response of the panel pots, and it’s a deadband for noise rejection, so if it hasn’t detected a large change for a while it stops updating and ignores small changes below its wake-up threshold. It’s possible there was actually too much background noise and it didn’t sound stable if it was always-live, or possibly this was an abundance of caution. Theoretically this could be changed in firmware…”
Moog said that they would put in a request for a firmware update to be able to turn this feature off.
For me the negative aspects are mostly avoidable musically, but it would be nice to be able to switch off the noise-protection.
