Steely Dan - Home at last synth solo

Hey everyone. I’ve wondered for awhile how Donald Fagen got the “flutter” out of his synth on Home at Last, on the best album of all time, Aja. If you disagree with that statement, you are wrong. So very, very wrong. :unamused:

Anyways, I think he was using an ARP Odyssey around '77 when Aja was recorded, but Donald and Walter probably had so much GEAR lying around that any vintage compressor or analog mixing board could be responsible for the magic of that synth solo.

Are there any other Dan fans who have found success in getting the subtle flutter and wow of the ARP odyssey (or whatever else they were using)?

Man every time I listen to this album I get chills… and I really like how they layered the brass section with synth parts…

I challenge you…The very best, in-your-face, cream-your-pants album EVER is Thick as a Brick by Jethro Tull. :smiling_imp:

Good question, and one of my top 5 Steely Dan favs…

One thing is sure, he used (or tried to) a Arp Soloist at some point, eheh

On a related matter, I love the woodwind-like synth chords buried in the mix in the choruses for Haitian divorce

is this going to turn into a “my favorite album is better than your favorite album” thread… cuz if it is i have to say My bloody valentine’s “loveless” conquers all

It’s hard to tell
Fagen doesn’t use synths a lot and doesn’t talk a lot about them either
I vaguely remember an interview around the Kamakiriad album where he talked about how the pads were creating using some Casio-like keyboard
