Square wave -

Hi everyone,
new user here just joined up, question to anyone who can help is square waves, used in synthesisers & what do they sound like when applied to a certain application? &
what frequency is the highest can be used?
thanks

Basically, what the square wave does as a modulator is to turn on/off its destination (ie a gate). So, on a filter for example, a square would open the filter, then close it again. On Off On Off On Off… as fast as you set the frequency. Other wave forms would do the same thing, with various slopes (fades in and out, instead of just on/off) The speed of the square would be dependant on the source. If you were using an oscillator directly, it would begin to sound like a new waveform as the speed of the modulation happened so fast that your ears could no longer detect the ons and offs.

Hope that helps!

A Squarewave basically consists of a Fundamental Sinewave with odd harmonic overtones, where the Amplitude of Harmonic number 3 is 1/3 of the fundamental, Harmonic 5 is 1/5 of the fundamental, Harmonic 7 is 1/7 of the fundamental, and so on…
