SP midi controller woes(please help)

Hello everyone,

just got my first moog over the week, which im extatic about. However I bought a midi usb controller to use with it, figuring they both use USB-B I just need to get a custon USB-B to USB-B cable whipped up, and I’ll be good. I was very wrong.

The controller only has a USB-B port, because it’s designed to be used in unison with various DJ software via laptop to help save space…seeing as dj booths are notoriously tiny.

So, I called up Moog TS and they suggested I use midi-ox. I downloaded it, and it’s like trying to decipher swahili. Then I did a search and a thread came up discussing the same issue and a user suggested this http://www.kentonuk.com/products/items/utilities/usb-host.shtml. the problem is there’s no follow up post. Can someone please shed some light on this product? I have no idea if it will work, or if midi-ox will and I’m not into the idea of spending cash to fix this problem, however if this thing does work I’ll do it.

Anyway, thanks everyone.

I tried to use my Slim Phatty with a Midi Controller once but found that it had no midi out port, only USB-B like yours.
I couldn’t track down any USB-B - USB-B cables (I guess I could have made one though) so I ended up borrowing another Midi Controller from a friend which had a midi out port.

I’m sorry I haven’t been much help as I don’t know anything about the software, but if it doesn’t work out, I’d recommend getting a Midi Controller with a midi out port (and usb maybe - as it might come out handy) for direct connection simplicity..

Good Luck with figuring out the software though.

As far as I am aware you cannot connect USB-B to USB-B. Neither of the devices will be a host device.

The Kenton product acts as your host - so you can plug the USB from your controller into the USB-A of the MIDI USB host and then use the DIN out to plug it into the SP. The box would relay the information in the correct format for the SP to read. Just check your controller is class compliant.

It is 84 pounds though. Could probably pick up another controller with midi out for a similar amount, semi-decent one second hand.

Yea, I got a custom usb cable made up and found that out the hard way. But, what exactly is class compliant mean?

And thank you so much for the help.

Actually I just looked it up, the contoller is class compliant. Phew. Luckily a store here in the states has one for sale. I normally would just say screw it, and pick up a used controller, but this one is very unique and the $150+ shipping is worth it to get my rig up and running. Again, thank you very much.

The iconnectMIDI box (http://www.iconnectmidi.com/) has a USB A port and two DIN connections, it’s designed to connect IOS devices, but also works as a computer replacement for connecting USB controllers to DIN. However, it’s kinda pricey.
