My new SP works very well when connected by midi with my ALESIS ION synth but don’t works at all with the Roland A37
My A37 is the master keyboard for my whole set: Waldorf MicroQ, Roland XV5050, Novation A station, Nord Modular G2 Engine, Roland VK8M, and works very well with all these synth; it works well too with my very old EMS Synthi AKS !!!
But with the last new synth, the SP, it does not works… WHY ???
Unfortunetly i have checked all these points; A37 send on Ch 1; SP receive on Ch 1; all cables are connected;
Test 1: A37 send on my whole set trough my Midi solutions T8 Midi Splitter: the whole set works, but not the SP !!
Test 2: A37 send on the SP alone trough a dedicated midi cable: SP don’t works !!
A couple ideas which are probably not the solution but worth considering - does the Slim register that it is actually receiving MIDI? When the pre-set is active, you would see an arrow symbol on the left side of the display when MIDI data is received.
If you are seeing the arrow, check to see whether the A37 is sending volume CC data which is effectively muting the output of the slim.
You could also route the A37 MIDI via software such as MidiPipe and then filter out everything except note on/off messages; and also monitor and compare the messages transmitted by the A37 and the Ion to see what the difference could be.
I have seen hardware problems with MIDI before where there is a power supply issue - so there’s a possibility that the Slim wants a good steady 5v serial connection for MIDI, which the Alesis possibly provides better than the Roland. If your other synths work with the A37 they might be more forgiving. I only mention this because it took me ages to debug some MIDI issues I had once and that turned out to be the solution.
To HowardJones :
One of your ideas is really helping !
Arrow symbol is not visible
I’m effraid the A 37 provides not the correct midi 5V, cause i remember a similar problem with my Midi Solutions T8 Thru Box: when connected directly to the A37, it does’nt worked. Now the T8 needs power supply by midi to work !
The solution was to connect the A37 to the G2 midi in and the Nord Modular G2 Thru to the T8 midi in. In that condition T8 wroughts.
But a similar attempt with the A37 connected to ALESIS Ion midi in and the ALESIS Ion midi Thru to the SP midi in don’t works (no arrow symbol and no sound at all ) !
The SP seems want the steady 5V you mentioned in your post.
I’ll have to try with a new master keyboard ; opportunity to modernize my set !!!
Sincerely thanks to HowardJones and JWaltman for help and hope Moog Music’s team wille have a suggestion !!!
Regards to everybody and sorry for my broken english !
