Sound cutting out

Hello all,

I have a barely used Moog Sub 37, literally under 12 hours use.
At the weekend, I couldn’t get any sound from it unless I constantly adjusted the volume pot, when I let go, the 37 would continue to play for around a second and then cut out, every time.

Has anyone else experienced this, or have any idea what the issue may be, seems odd that it plays fine whilst volume is being adjusted?

Many thanks in advance,
Alex

Try again, but without USB or MIDI cables attached to the Sub 37.
If this works fine, somthing appears to send MIDI CC #7 data.

Thanks for the reply!

Ok, tried without USB plugged in, the 37 played without cutting out but was very crackly both when playing keys and when using the filter.
I reset once again and the crackling stopped but there’s loud popping on switching it on.
I then plugged USB in and connected to Logic, same problem is back…

Upsetting, to say the least…

…reinstalling firmware

This must be a MIDI loop. Try disabling LOCAL parameter.

Sorry, not sure what you mean?

I’m in touch with Moog, looks like it needs to go for a check-up.

I guess stiiiiiiive is referring to the LOCAL CONTROL parameter. See page 45 of the Sub 37 1.1 manual:

Sometimes it’s useful to disable the keyboard and/or other physical controllers on the Sub 37 when using it as a MIDI controller or when recording tracks into a DAW.

I believe this is one of the least well understood settings in Moog synths, and also the one that causes the most mysterious issues, since it can cause MIDI feedback loops. Some more explicit warnings in the manual and and an explanation of why “Sometimes it’s useful to disable” this would maybe help.

But, of course there is always the possibility that there is actually a hardware problem in this case.

I’ve reinstalled the firmware, reset global/factory settings etc, it’s also crackling, looks like its a hardware issue unfortunately…

About MIDI loops, just in case.

The MIDI « LOCAL » parameter allows to break the connection between the local controllers (i.e. the keyboard and.or wheels, knobs etc) and the sound generator.
Why would one do that, you may wonder. An example is that you may want to control any (soft)synth with the Moog keyboard while your DAW is sequencing the Moog’s synth engine.

Now what’s a MIDI loop? When you MIDI connect your Moog to a computer in both directions (i.e. with either a USB cable or 2 DIN cables), there are some parameters to take into account. If you are manipulating the Moog’s cutoff knob and your DAW is configured so that it transmits MIDI parameter changes, this change may be transmitted back the synth. The tiny latency between your moves and the MIDI being sent back can cause the setting to alternate between two different (although usually close) values. Hence the “zipper effect” or cracking.

To avoid that, you must decide whether your DAW and/or Moog shall transmits back what it receives, decide if the Moog controllers shall control the Moog’s generator directly or not, and also set the MIDI in and out channels so that no conflict occurs.

One solution is to set LOCAL to OFF so that only MIDI inputs control the Moog’s generator.
Another one is to prevent your DAW to send back MIDI to the Moog.
Depending on your needs you may prefer one of those or even others

I appreciate you taking the time to reply in such detail, I’ll try this this evening, fingers crossed!

Cheers,
Alex
