So I just rebuilt my studio after 6 years of being a laptop producer (Hurricane took everything years ago) and Im having some problem running my midi. As it sits right now, Im running the SP (MIDI) to the back of my Presonus Fire Project interface. From there, I have my Presonus running firewire to my Macbook, and my MPK25 controller running USB to my Macbook. I use Ableton 8, and was informed I could link my controller/Interface the External Instrument plug in in ableton live. I am getting the MIDI signal, my output On/Off button is selected. Ive also went into the preferences in ableton, selected the correct Audio in/out, and have the interface commuting everything except MIDI (sound). I also went in the MIDI preferences in ableton, and tried everything I personally know. Im so lost at the moment. Can someone please shed some light on this for me?
Are you ‘routing’ Midi from the MPK to the SP via Ableton?
Have you tried ‘recording’ either push buttons (the PLAY NOTE) aka Enter button or moving knobs/tweaking parameters?
I say ‘routing’ and ‘recording’ in quotes because I’m not an Ableton user so don’t know the basic capabilities, except that it tastes great/less filling.
But I can tell you from experience that two devices connected to a Mac may not talk by default. The software will see USB activity alright and respond; Midi sent may or may get into the DAW depending on a number of factors, but certainly, by default, one will not route to the other unless Ableton does this by default or has a specific setup to do so.
Be good troubleshooting step to confirm that Ableton can ‘record’ events from the MPK and also from the SlimPhatty.
And you should also get your hands on “MIDI Patchbay” if you have not already. You can run this instead of any DAW temporarily to do the basic connectivity (routing), filtering of events, transpose, etc. I’ve been using it for years. (and it hasn’t been updated in years : )
