Slim Phatty or Minitaur?

hello guys.
i’m looking for some monophonic to do the bass+leads for my deep/house/tech tracks. “modern” sound.

i’m not sure which one to buy… Slim Phatty or Minitaur? the prices it’s a 200€ difference. not that much.

maybe some owners/producers in the same genre can shoot out the experiencies and advices about both machines?

thanks in advance.

If you want both basses AND leads, the Phatty is the answer. Minitaur is a bass synth only.

I have both, but if I had to choose one, I would go for the Slim Phatty, reason being that the Slim Phatty runs circles around the Minitaur in terms of sound design.
The Minitaur’s VCO do sound better to my ears, having said that, I prefer the VCF of the Phatty, both in terms of sound and for the available slopes, down to 1 pole, allow for a much larger sound palette.

The good thing about the Minitaur is that it can re-trigger the phase of the VCO on every gate signal, which is good if you want the exact same transient content for every bass note. Having said that, this option does smudge the transients in a way that is not very appealing to me, the sound is much better with the VCO running free. So you will end up recording/sampling the best notes and making a bassline pattern from the best sounding notes.

Generally though the raw sound is very different and I use both my SP and Minitaur for bass and for lead sounds (I am not a fan of very high notes on lead sounds anyway, so the Minitaur’s note limitation is of no consequence to my music). You will get a lot of mileage from the Minitaur for leads and for basic retro style FX, even with its very basic LFO and modulation matrix.

I mostly release psy-trance, but also make the odd tech house tune. Here’s an example with my SP doing the bass (VCO sync patch) and other analog like blips and blops (although I must say that I should have mixed the bassline channel a bit louder).

Deep house/ tech

You may require VCO reset (sync at note on) to get some of the basses you are looking for. If that is a requirement you are limited to minitaur or sub phatty.

I have a little phatty and love it, but if you need that super punch …

I am currently limited to digital to fill that need. The oscillator wave phase at note on can make a big difference for low frequencies. The super fast analog envelopes that moog offers, can make it even better (on the minitaur) and more noticeable (on the little/slim phatty).

thanks guys for the replies. :sunglasses:
after reading your posts, i think Phatty will be the best option. i want one Moog to cover bass+leads, so Phatty will be… i guess.

the last Rev2 for Minitaur surprised me a lot. wasn’t expecting it, and that’s why i’m in the middle… Phatty or Minitaur.

either way, i’m sure i’ll have a great add to my studio.
