With this configuration (see above), Latch is actually working when the Slim Phatty is controlled via “USB-MIDI in” but not when the standard (DIN) “MIDI in” is used.
Also, as a troubleshooting step, then try using only MIDI DIN between your keyboard and SP, and leave the USB disconnected.
Suggest using only MIDI OUT from the keyboard to MIDI IN of the SP to prevent any inadvertent MIDI loop contributing to the problem.
That would at least help isolate which signal chain might be causing the issues…
Any chance you might have access to another keyboard controller you can try?
I’m kind of reaching here, but it sort of sounds like your current keyboard could be sending some MIDI or sysex command that is turning off the latch…
I’ve tried with my Roland D-50 and my Nord Electro 3 73… same problem.
No MIDI signal seems to be sent when I release the keys of my D-50 or my NE3.
The only difference I get when “Latch” is enabled comparing to the “A” mode is that all keys I’ve pressed are played as long as I keep at least one key down… then disappear when I release the last key.
I’ll run some tests with my SP this evening and see if I can duplicate your issue…
UPDATE:
OK, I just tried this with one of my SP’s.
They’re running OS v3.12 680/34 (which IS slightly different from the version you posted…)
I’m using the same menu options you posted.
I’m using MIDI DIN - OUT on my Akai MPK25, directly to the MIDI DIN - IN on the SP.
Works fine.
So, I’m wondering if maybe your particular firmware has a possible issue?
Does the “L” display on the LCD screen when the latch mode is engaged?
Per the OS v3.1 addendum to the LP/SP, latch mode can still be activated with MIDI CC 91 (which I confirmed with my MIDI Designer template), but the latch enable/disable option is no longer part of the Advanced Preset: Arpeggiator menu; so, it’s probably unlikely that and inadvertent menu option or MIDI command is the culprit.
My gut feeling is perhaps there is an issue with the firmware.
Might be worth downloading the latest version from the Moog site and give it another shot…
I’ve done the update with the last firmware available through the MoogMusic.com : Phatty Firmware v3.12 - Slim Phatty - Mac from 2011-06-20 → OS vers. 3.12 680/30
Is the PC version “more up-to-date” than the Mac OSX version ?
Anyway, I’ve tried to plug my iPad through MIDI-Din (with iRig MIDI) using Orphion to send MIDI notes to the Slim Phatty… In this configuration the LATCH function is working fine now !
…so I guess I have some issues with the way my Roland D-50 and my Nord Electro 3 are sending MIDI notes… but I can’t figure what ?!?
Any chance you could put a MIDI monitor on your keyboards’ MIDI DIN output and intercept the data stream?
(There’s some pretty decent MIDI utilities for the iPad that could handle that task for you).
It really sounds like some command is being sent that disables the latch, although for the life of me I can’t figure how or why it would happen!
If you haven’t done so already, it might be worth powering up the keyboard first, THEN plug in the MIDI cable between the keyboard and Phatty.
I’ve never used a Nord, but I know my Roland AX-Synth sends some weird bank change messages when changing onboard patches, so maybe something similar is going on during your keyboards’ boot cycles (I’m reaching here; really at a total loss!!)
As far as the the OS v3.12 680/34 firmware is concerned, that is the version that came installed on my Slim Phatty’s.
I did check the PC firmware download from the Moog web site, and the download file actually contains two updates ~
The primary the OS v3.12 680 firmware, and a v34 USB update.
I don’t know if these would help your situation or not, so at this point I’m inclined to agree with stiiiiiiive -
probably time to get Moog tech support directly involved.
If you find a cause and cure, please post back here in give us an update, in case someone else runs into this weird issue.
Good luck with this one!
Hi there, sorry to revive this thread but I’m having the exact same issue as the OP. When latch is active the arpeggio will play as long as I have at least one note held but stops when I release. Any new info on this situation?
I am controlling the Slim Phatty with an Alpha Juno.
