So I rebuilt a keybed, and I cleaned with 99% alcohol and the q-tips turned dark.
Is it normal for a 40 year old instrument to have some slight glide on a key now and then?
EDIT: buying denatured alcohol today,
The buss bars/coil contact springs of the Minimoog D are notorious for unwanted occasional glide, pitch drift, whaling sounds, when getting misaligned and/or oxidized/dirty. That’s why I replaced mine with Kevin Lightner’s Synthfool OptoKey system (now owned, sold, and installed by Chris Hewitt of This Old Synth).
What can I do with this and an Alesis A6? I think the A6 has CV but it was never implemented.
From the A6 PDF
"19.
Can I connect my analog sequencer or
controller to the A6 Andromeda?
Yes, you can, the
A6
has analog CV inputs to the
oscillators and filters, allowing you to connect
some of your precious vintage controllers to the
A6
"
Congrats on your decision to upgrade to an optical keyboard system for your beloved Mini !
Be aware that the MIDI implementation of the OptoKey system was an afterthought and is very limited to Note On/Note Off capability only.
Although recent versions allow you to choose the MIDI in and out channels as I understand it (mine is the early fixed channels version).
So far as pitch CV is concerned, the OptoKey is generating it locally for use exclusively by the Minimoog and doesn’t output it externally.
Kevin’s original idea was to have an optical system that would replace the mechanical one, but be completely transparent to the user. As such, the OptoKey only controls the 44 keys of the Mini, and only outputs and receives those notes on the MIDI interface. Like I said, very limited MIDI implementation because it is a “bonus” feature added in the late stages of development.
As I understand it, Chris is currently updating the software and hardware to try and reduce building costs and eliminate any potential bugs and add new features, so the one you’ll get will be an even better version than mine.
You will be able to play your Mini from the A6, and your Mini will be able to play your A6 (on the 44 notes range of the Mini only) all via MIDI.
