"Shine On You Crazy Diamond"

I was wondering if anyone has tried to recreate the lead tone at the beginning of “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” (I-V). Or for that matter, has anyone tried recreating the lead tones on any of the “Wish You Were Here” album. There’s some tasteful use of synth throughout it.

Which lead tone? There are several. Most of it is actually guitar. For the rest, think ‘reeds’ when you try to duplicate them.

lead synth at 1:00 and later again at 6:30

Start out like this and tune to your ear.
OSC 1 on
OSC octave 8’
OSC1 wave around 2 on the label a little past
Sync FM and all off
Filter cutoff around 1K
Spacing centered
Resonance around 4
Contour all the way up
Mode lowpass

Filter
A 2nd line past 10
D 2nd line past 10
S 7
R 12 o’clock
Amount to filter around 11 o’clock (Very dramatic change here!)

Volume
A 4 lines past 10
D 12 o’clock
S around 6
R around 10

(I only use OSC 1 for the sound, you can tune it to be what you want.)

I thought you were going to want the harder to duplicate filter sweep sounds in Part V and VII/VIII.

Oh, and for the intro to Welcome to the Machine, an Omni is indispensable.
I haven’t tried to dup it on my Moog as I have the machine he used and it works quite well. There is a lead patch from the factory in my Vger that with slight tweaking does that solo at the end very well for me.

Well, I’d love to know how to do that as well

Thanks for the great info. I really appreciate it. I’ll definitely try out your settings.

Thanks for the link to this past post. I should have thought to search before I posted my question.

What I gave you is close. You will need to tweak to get it down puss.
But, that is how you learn what the knobs do!
It really helps to learn what they do so your set up takes less and less time as you practice.

If anyone can find a copy of this book, it is what I used as a text to learn synthesis back when D’s were new. It is written for the Odyssey but except for the ring mod section it crosses over nicely.

I just looked online and Princeton has a copy in the Mendal Music Library if that is anywhere close to you.

Thanks again. I’m waiting for my Voyager to arrive, so asking these sorts of questions is helping me cope! I’ll see if I can find the book. My wife works in Princeton, so I’ll make a trip to the library, and get credit for a “romantic lunch visit” at her work.

Thanks for the info, I’ll try that tonight!
