I can’t figure out why my midi notes aren’t being received by ableton? I can write notes in ableton that will play the moog but…
Also, I notice that every time I restart the phatty the Midi Setup menu changes to “all notes off”. Does this mean that that is what it is set as? Changing the setting to send all cc’s doesn’t do anything
Don’t take this as me talking down to you or anything but…
…I can’t tell you how many times I’ve connected and reconnected MIDI cables today wondering why there was no sound only to realize I didn’t have it plugged into the MIDI IN when I was controlling it from Ableton, or not having it plugged into the MIDI OUT when I was using the LP to control my Slim.
everything is set up right in ableton… all the midi cables are set up right. Everything is working other than ableton receiving notes from the keyboard. I don’t know what’s going on… I’ve tried restarting everything with only the usb plugged in… ugh
You have to create an audio track. “Ext In” should reflect your port, which would be 1 or 2 whichever you have it plugged into your interface. Then arm the track. Play it. If you hear it, move to next step. Plug the Slim Phatty into your computer via USB. Then go to Live preferences menu and choose the midi sync menu. Under midi ports you will see the Slim Phatty. Arm the track section in and out. After you do this, move to step 3. Create a midi track. Where it says Midi To, - you have to choose the Slim Phatty. Next, create a midi clip, and punch in some midi notes. It should work fine
Thanks, I have everything set up right though… I think something is wrong with my ableton or something because when I directly record midi from my keyboard using the midi to usb adapter it is oddly extreeeeeeemely slow now. Unable to play anything because after playing two or three notes then I’ll start to hear the notes… I have a macbook pro and a CI 1 stein berg sound card.
Ok so I opened up a new project and the terrible latency had to do with something in the project, but still no moog being noticed. I’m wondering why my moog every time I restart it the midi setup menu goes to “all note off” …? is that normal?
This is definitely a problem with the moog because when i go to midi setup in the mac osx preferences the notes played on the keyboard aren’t being recognized. I’ve rebooted everything, restored factory settings, cycled and what not without midi cables in, un plugged and plugged bad in to different socket… what haven’t I done?
I don’t want to sound mean but have you read the manual?
I believe the MIDI All Notes Off is just a command you have to actually ‘SELECT’ and click and it turns off all MIDI notes to prevent hanging notes. I am pretty sure it says this in the manual.
Okay cool. You’ve said that repeatedly though, could you post how you’ve got your equipment set up now? Unless you’ve already figured out how to get it working. Pictures are helpful too.
I have the same exact setup as you, my SP and my LP are being run into my Mac into Ableton and it’s working fine. In the IT world this would probably be described as a PEBKAC situation and not a Moog situation ;]
yeah i know it’s most definitely me doing something wrong. So… Midi in and out cables are connected from the moots midi in and the midi out to the keyboard mini in and out… I also don’t have any settings on the slim to merge midi data. I didn’t think that was needed but I got an e-mail from a guy at moog saying this: “When you turn the knobs, the MIDI CC information is being seen and recorded by Ableton just fine. This suggests that the MIDI output of the Slim is working just fine. It will not send note on/off messages if the notes are being sent to it viz MIDI. If it was set up on the same track that would start a MIDI feedback loop. The only way the Slim will send notes out would be through the MIDI THRU port or if you merged MIDI Out with MIDI IN to send notes. This would however defeat the purpose of controlling it from a computer.”
OMG… i kind of got it working lmao but it’s doing what he said it would do which is do a midi loop thing.
ok I got it working… FML. for some reason I didn’t think any midi merge was needed. Sorry everybody! lol Basically I just had to have under “MIDI MERGE - DIN IN: BOTH OUT”
p.s. I did actually try all the midi merge settings at one point but in order for it to work i had to do a recycle
Well I am confused at how you connect everything because judging by what you said, you only have the slim connected to the keyboard and not the computer. I am new to this world of MIDI, but may I ask why you connected both the MIDI IN and OUT of your Slim to the MIDI IN and OUT of your keyboard?
I’m guessing the midi keyboard also serves as a midi interface for the computer . . . but I may be wrong.
FWIW, I’ve controlled my Slim with Live before using a Novation SL MKII, in which case, I connected USB from my Mac to the Novation, and the midi in-and-out to the Phatty. In this setup, even though I could use Live to control the Phatty via midi, I could also record the midi information into Live that I played on the Phatty (knob tweaks, etc.). Of course, I still had to use two tracks, one audio and one midi.
No it is connected to the computer, that’s where my problems been. Usb to computer and the midi cords to the keyboard.
It’s so I can make ableton play the moog from notes written in the program AND I can play the keyboard to play the notes AND send the midi notes of the keyboard to ableton to be recorded.
So basically, I play the keyboard and record the midi while hearing the moog. Then i fine tune what I played on teh keyboard and fix stupid latency stuff in ableton. Then I hit “play” in ableton to make ableton play the recorded midi notes which play the moog. Then i can record the audio while its playing and i can also tweak nobs while it plays the tune… n stuff… lol
my god i am dumb… yeah I didn’t need both midi cables lmao. for some reason I thought the midi had to go to the keyboard to play the moog… but ableton is playing the moog… if that makes any sense. thanks for pointing out how dumb i am
