[S37E] Bug: Save Overwrites Presets with Dot in Name

ATTENTION: Potential Data Loss!!!

I just lost a couple of preset files, because I changed their names!

What I did:

  • Rename “Sequence Ticker 04 01” → “Sequence Ticker 04 v1.01”
  • Rename “Sequence Ticker 04 02” → “Sequence Ticker 04 v2.01”
  • Rename “Sequence Ticker 04 03” → “Sequence Ticker 04 v2.02”
  • Rename “Sequence Ticker 04 04” → “Sequence Ticker 04 v2.03”

What I ended up with are the presets:

  • “Sequence Ticker 04 v1.01”
  • “Sequence Ticker 04 v2.03”

Looking at the file system, revealed what happend:

  • “Sequence Ticker 04 v1.syx”
  • “Sequence Ticker 04 v2.syx”

So when saving the preset, the Editor simply drops everything behind the dot and adds “syx”. Thus overwriting the “Sequence Ticker 04 v2.syx” two times. Not good. Especially because there was no warning that a file with this name already existed.

Fortunately, I did the renaming in the proper sequence and my latest version of the sound was preserved…

Thanks, reported. If it appears to be an OS limitation then it’d be probably needed to block the use of dots in preset names.

Hi Gil, thanks.

I don’t think it’s an OS limitation: I can name a file like that (“Any Name v1.02.syx”) just fine in the Finder.
