Running Animoog through Filtatron

So, I picked up a SIIG USB SoundWave 7.1 Pro Rohs http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000OOG3N0/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i01 to get a s/pdif connection via the Apple Camera Connection Kit from the 30-pin port on my iPad2 (which works great, by the way…ZERO latency when connecting to the optical digital IN on my MacBook Pro!!). Tonite, I fired up Filtatron on my iPad and Animoog on my iPhone, connecting the iPhone to the IN on the SoundWave, the iPad to the OUT and then patching the whole thing into the optical port on my MacBook Pro. The result? The Animoog sounds getting processed through Filtaton…AMAZING!! I can then record these in Ableton, putting whatever effects I want there too.

It is too cool a setup…can’t wait to explore some more tomorrow!!

To Reidjazz-
Question- can you hook up your iDevices in the reverse order and it still works?

Example-
I want to be able to play Animoog on my ipad4, which is easier and bigger to operate the app instrument.
Then run this to my iPhone4, running Filtatron. This app works just fine on the smaller screen.

Then run this sound into my computer to record into a DAW of choice…

Before buying hardware, I’m weighing out all my options, since this is the setup I am trying to achieve.

Can you test this setup for me and report if it works?

The one thing I have been hearing is iphone4 can’t accept audio input via usb camera connector.
Is this true? What iPhone are you using?

I have an iPhone 4S. I have been unsuccessful at getting sound in or out via a USB Camera Connection Kit. However, what I haven’t tried but will over the weekend is to use my iRig in the headphone jack on my iPhone running Filtatron and connect my iPad running Animoog into and then run out from the miniplug out on the iRig to my computer, sound system etc. In theory this should work. I’ll report back here once I try it.

I really don’t understand why Apple changed the audio inputs in 30-pin. It makes no sense.

Have you heard if this is also true of the ipod4th gen?

Or the iPhone 5 with lightning port?

If you still could at some point hook up your ipad2 running Animoog, output this signal into iRig in headphone port of iphone4s running Filtatron, then out of iRig headphone jack into your computer (or even just headphones).

Let me know if there are any noise or latency issues running it that direction.

I’d really appreciate it, as it seems this iRig may be my only hope to get audio into my iphone4.
(I realize it will only be a mono signal via iRig, but luckily Filtatron only processes mono input)

OK, I can verify that I am able to successfully send sounds from Animoog on my iPad into my iPhone running Filtatron via the iRig plugged into the headphone jack. And a good strong signal too!

This guy seems to suggest based on his testing that iPhone4 in fact can INPUT audio via 30-pin, using JAM, Line6, or Sonoma Wireworks…

I wonder if it doesn’t work only specifically using Filtatron app. Maybe Moog didn’t write the right code to find audio coming from 30-pin.

I don’t think it has anything to do with Filtatron, for as soon as I plug in the Camera Connection Kit USB adapter to my iPhone 4s’ 30-pin dock, I get the error message “This accessory is not supported by iPhone.”

There is a slight amount of latency but no hum that I could hear. The signal is stronger if I go out of my iPad via the 30-pin dock than through the headphone jack, but that is in line with what I’ve noticed before in getting sound out of my iPad.

So iRig may be a decent option for me after all.

I’m wondering if a better quality, zero latency option would be input via 30-pin using a dedicated audio input device such as Apogee JAM, or Sonoma Wireworks adaptor. (Both pretty pricey though). Both say on their websites that they are compatible with iphone4,4s, and 5.

I guess the only hitch would be if Filtatron isn’t programmed to “find” input from the 30-pin port.

That’s my big question at this point.

Amos, the local Moog person who is active here, would be able to answer that. Since I believe the iPhone & iPad versions of Filtatron are the same, I can’t see why it couldn’t send/receive input from an iPhone’s 30-pin port.

Funny you say that. I actually emailed Amos, and even he said he wasn’t sure, and recommended I ask around on the forums!

Weird that they wouldn’t know this as a matter of common knowledge.

I’ve just tried a solution that I can confirm works with Filtatron -
at least with an iPad 2 (but does NOT work on iPhone 3GS, which I currently have, but IS supposed to work with iPhone 4)

The TASCAM iU2 audio / MIDI interface has a built-in (rather short!) dock connector to hook up with pre-iPhone 5 devices.
(Have no idea if the adapters for the new iO device connectors will work or not; I probably won’t upgrade the 3GS until after the first of the year, and my iPad 2 should last quite a while for me…)

It can also connect thru a powered USB hub using the Apple Camera Kit (which unfortunately also does NOT work on the iPhone 3GS :frowning: ).
If using the dock connector, the interface can be connected to a USB charger (connected AFTER the dock connector is attached!) to charge the attached iOS device.

MIDI is standard DIN connectors using included adapter cables.
Audio IN is 1/4" instrument, and L/R (stereo) 1/4" line / mic (plus includes 1/4" to XLR adapters for microphones)

Output is 1/8" headphone, stereo RCA, and RCA digital S/PDIF, with level adjustment knobs for just about everything.

Sound quality is GREAT - all my audio apps on my iPad 2 will default to the iU2 when it’s connected, and all work fine.
(Animoog sounds AWESOME going out the S/PDIF to my computer’s audio system!)

Audio in to apps is very clear, and signal levels are NOT an issue~
As a test, I ran the same Filtatron sample on my 3GS and iPad, feeding the audio in on the iU2 from the 3GS headphone jack.
From Filtatron on the iPad, I could tell very little difference in audio quality when switching between the “sample” Filtatron audio and the app line-in of the same audio on the 3GS (but it did make for some crazy effects with the mix of two Filtatrons running simultaneously!!!).

Now the bad news:
Even though this device has been out less than a year, TASCAM (and Sweetwater.com in the US) have already dropped it, and from the traffic on KVR and other forums, it appears this COULD be because of potential issues with the post-iPhone 5 devices and the new connector.
(I have a feeling that will be the issue for a lot of “legacy” 3rd party hardware already in circulation, unfortunately :angry: ).

However, Guitar Center still carries them, which is where I checked out and wound up buying mine.
(Would’t be surprised if they’re available at a big discount before too long, but I don’t know that for sure.)

No regrets on my part -
it’s a great portable I/O solution for the now “legacy” iO devices, and since I’m generally NOT one that feels the need to “upgrade” every year, I think I’ll get plenty of use out of mine.

Just developed a whole new appreciation for things to do with Filtatron! :smiley:

Sounds interesting… I think I’m following it, but need clarification.

Let me get this straight-

You attach the iU2 to the 30pin port of the iPhone.
iPhone is running Filtatron.

Then, you run a stereo line out of the iPad’s headphone jack (?) into the input port of the iU2.
The ipad is running Animoog.

Then you run a cable OUT of the iU2 to your computer.

The result is you can manipulate the iPad’s Animoog signal via the iPhone’s Filtatron app, and hear all of this beautifully insane sound on the computer?

Update.
Just looking at specs and reviews of Tascam iu2 online, and ran across Tascam’s page. They just recently announced the iXJ2 device on 11/19/12.
It looks like the perfect mono/stereo I/O solution for idevices. Looks clean simple, and high quality.

Can’t find it for sale yet on Amazon or anywhere else.

Hoping the price is right!

I used a slightly different setup (devices swapped), but the results would be the same.

The USB connection can be used as the I/0 for the computer. The iU2 is recognized by Windows 7 and doesn’t use any additional drivers, but it probably needs them, sine the audio over USB was a bit choppy. The S/PDIF audio was crisp, clean, and sounds awesome!

Looks like the new TASCAM interface is still going to use the 30-pin connector. Hopefully, it will work with the dock connector adapters for the new generation of iOS devices, and will include audio drivers for Windows 7 & 8.
