Rogue versus Little Phatty

I found this on youtube, thought you guys might dig the crap out of this.

Rogue vs LP

THis shows that Moog knows what their sound is for sure!

Eric

Interesting! I’ve came across this video before but didn’t bother to watch it.
The Little Phatty sounds a lot snappier, there is a noticable difference between the notes. The Rogue sounds more cohesive to my ears. I like both sounds though, but the Little Phatty has my preference.

I tell you what, anyone that was looking for a replacement synth for their Rogue needs look no further.

THe LP ain’t no joke.

My theory on the difference in vintage sounds vs. new Moog sounds is deteriorating components in the old stuff. That and the different types of materials that were used back then. Just my opinion.

Yeah, that would make sense.

Well here we go into the Model D vs. Voyager discussion…discrete this, bright that.

Perhaps some of the circuits back then were just superior. I don’t know anything about ELectronics.

But Ill bet that if that if you took the LP back in time and compared it with a brand new rogue, there woudl still be an audible difference.

Where is Kevin on this subject?

well… i owned a rogue for 20 years, so I might have an opinion… it was a pretty agressive little beast… loved the auto-trigger function…BUT, the LP is so much more sophisticated, and absolutely a joy to play… I prefer the smoother sound of the LP, and of course that overload is sweet…and I did feel that the rogue was showing it’s age in a certain “roughness”…I know some like this quality, and that’s great for them… for the music I often play, the LP gives me what I always wanted the Rogue to sound like.

I must admit that the build quality of the two synths is quite different… Moog was trying for a budget model in the Rogue… and suceeded… the action was pretty cheap, and the knobs and switches un-remarkable at best…the LP’s solution to cut costs is the reduced knobage… but the elegance of the solution (a la the Source) is so easy to play. Also, I really never liked the wheels on the Rogue, or the short travel of the sliders…

Amazing thing is, I actually own a “free” LP… I sold my Rogue and also my old Korg Mono/Poly to finance the LP… and those two synths were given to me for free (with cases!) in 1989, by a student who thought they were obsolete.

As has been echoed on this forum many times, I feel that the LP is a true instrument in my hands… I used it to accompany a choir this past Sunday…people really noticed the organic quality of it as compared to just some “keyboard” … won more than a few fans for analog synths that day!!! - best, jgirv

Hey, theres nothing like a Free Moog. My Micro was given to my father from the Original owner. Im owner number 3 because I claim it.

Obsolete? lol Jeez thats why they fetch 5000 on ebay now cause old sucks.

Eric

…yeah, I remember the synths were practically untouched by that student… so i got a real deal… used them for many years, mostly in live settings…

there really is a Moog “sound”, by the way… although I enjoyed playing the Mono/Poly, and felt it a more complete synth than the Rogue, I did prefer the sound of the Rogue…

for what it’s worth, I sold them on Ebay for what I considered to be fair, non-rip-off prices… the new owners were very happy indeed!

Who was talking about the Voyager?
I don’t know anything about electronics either, I just rely on my ears.

…oh, he’s just referring to the more “famous” comparison topic…

No but on any kind of forum, this one, any synth one there are heated debates. On youtube comments, harmony central reviews, evevrywhere humans interact about synths, they want to kill eachother over which one sounds better.

I can spot them a mile away and usually try to run for the hills.

lol

Yes. This is just a friendly discussion though.

This is just a friendly discussion though.

I was afraid it was about to go apeshit, hence my response.
Also, it’s a rather obsolete discussion on a Moog forum. It’s all Moog at the end of the day.

And I was trying to diffuse the situation by reminding everyone that it was a friendly discussion.

Glad you jumped in!

NO Im so mad now Im going to just say that the Voyager is superior lolollol.

Here we go.

No, im just teasing. Of corse its friendly, but they CAN get pretty heated as seen on lots of forums where this happens.

Believe me, it happens.

Eric

Yes EricK, and families are torn apart over it, and their pieces are left all over the living room for someone else to clean up, while the Moogs that were responsible for the war sit on their stands content that they can now rest in peace while Chuck Norris plays a happy tune on them.

Yes, I know. I’m participating in a discussion about cheap mastering services on another forum and I believe they don’t like my take on things.

Just say
“Hey, Im from the Netherlands and we appreciate music more than you guys in the USA.” lolololo

THat will calm them down!
