Interesting! I’ve came across this video before but didn’t bother to watch it.
The Little Phatty sounds a lot snappier, there is a noticable difference between the notes. The Rogue sounds more cohesive to my ears. I like both sounds though, but the Little Phatty has my preference.
My theory on the difference in vintage sounds vs. new Moog sounds is deteriorating components in the old stuff. That and the different types of materials that were used back then. Just my opinion.
well… i owned a rogue for 20 years, so I might have an opinion… it was a pretty agressive little beast… loved the auto-trigger function…BUT, the LP is so much more sophisticated, and absolutely a joy to play… I prefer the smoother sound of the LP, and of course that overload is sweet…and I did feel that the rogue was showing it’s age in a certain “roughness”…I know some like this quality, and that’s great for them… for the music I often play, the LP gives me what I always wanted the Rogue to sound like.
I must admit that the build quality of the two synths is quite different… Moog was trying for a budget model in the Rogue… and suceeded… the action was pretty cheap, and the knobs and switches un-remarkable at best…the LP’s solution to cut costs is the reduced knobage… but the elegance of the solution (a la the Source) is so easy to play. Also, I really never liked the wheels on the Rogue, or the short travel of the sliders…
Amazing thing is, I actually own a “free” LP… I sold my Rogue and also my old Korg Mono/Poly to finance the LP… and those two synths were given to me for free (with cases!) in 1989, by a student who thought they were obsolete.
As has been echoed on this forum many times, I feel that the LP is a true instrument in my hands… I used it to accompany a choir this past Sunday…people really noticed the organic quality of it as compared to just some “keyboard” … won more than a few fans for analog synths that day!!! - best, jgirv
…yeah, I remember the synths were practically untouched by that student… so i got a real deal… used them for many years, mostly in live settings…
there really is a Moog “sound”, by the way… although I enjoyed playing the Mono/Poly, and felt it a more complete synth than the Rogue, I did prefer the sound of the Rogue…
for what it’s worth, I sold them on Ebay for what I considered to be fair, non-rip-off prices… the new owners were very happy indeed!
No but on any kind of forum, this one, any synth one there are heated debates. On youtube comments, harmony central reviews, evevrywhere humans interact about synths, they want to kill eachother over which one sounds better.
I can spot them a mile away and usually try to run for the hills.
I was afraid it was about to go apeshit, hence my response.
Also, it’s a rather obsolete discussion on a Moog forum. It’s all Moog at the end of the day.
Yes EricK, and families are torn apart over it, and their pieces are left all over the living room for someone else to clean up, while the Moogs that were responsible for the war sit on their stands content that they can now rest in peace while Chuck Norris plays a happy tune on them.
