The custom dual manual controller on top of the Rhodes was the giveaway.
The controller was stolen early in Roger’s career. Years later Roger lost the modular and a pile of gear to a warehouse fire. Not long ago the controller turned up on ebay (!!) and word got around to Roger who contacted the winning bidder and got it back.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Roger for the ‘Conversations’ feature that was part of MoogSpace (this might be where you read it, Eric). In that interview, Roger described the depressing experience of having the controller stolen from his rig, only to see it offered many years later on EBay (the seller wasn’t the thief). Roger bought it back, and now keeps it in his office at Apple as a conversation piece.
That’s actually my photo (although I didn’t take it). Looks like it was “appropriated” from my Flickr site. Aww what the hell, no harm done.
The shot was from a Moog clinic RP gave in 1975 for a music store I was managing. I was fortunate enough to be able to hang with him for a couple of days. He was a comsummate professional, although I remember him calling a certain white British keyboard a “Smellotron”.
THat could have very well been where I read it. It showed pictures of the unit, talked about it had a special marking or something or other on the back or a special serial number or something.
