Well in addition to what was already mentioned, the RME will have a selectable filter pole (greatest feature), whereas the LP has the filter overdrive.
The Voyager wins out with the extra osc but just narrowly due to the Phatty’s Arpeggiator so with each unit there is some give or take. But once you throw in the extended range of the keybed (a much nicer feeling keybed than the original stage 1 phatty I played on at the store) and the touchscreen, the Voyager scoots a bit ahead of the Phatty in a race of features, to take home the gold with the Knob-per-function interface.
These make both of the instruments individually desirable and together totally desirable.
I think I would prefer though to have a full keyboard voyager and a rack mount LP for these features and for cheaper polyphony.
Every piece of equipment has its own qualities. I get that. I quess I’ll just slow down…end up buying both…in time…probly…have a couple RME’s for my LP and a couple RME’s for my Voyager…
Oh, I remember the other thing I was going to say…
The RME has everything self contained… less hardware, less stuff to go wrong down the road ie key contacts, touchscreen etc.
Not that that should be a huge issue anyway, because Moog makes stuff really well, but something to think about nonetheless…
I would feel very secure bringing the RME in a case to a gig. I’d be worried about someone banging into a Voyager keyboard. This is why I stopped bringing my Prophet '08 SE to gigs. I’m planning to get a Tetra instead…
No, you have the one a friend of mine was slated to get in Toronto. He put it on hold, and it was supposed to go to him, but they made a mistake at L&M, and ended up shipping it out to a customer in Edmonton. I assume that would be you, because the timing is right.
At the same time that this happened, I was waaaay late getting paid for some gigs and college work, so I sold him my RME for about what I had paid for it, knowing I’d get another one someday. I still have the rack case, and the two VX boxes in their rack case as well.
I had the same dilemma (bought the Phatty first because of the $$; wanted an original Model D MiniMoog but there were 3,000+ on eBay in good shape)
When it came time to buy the next piece of gear, I found the ‘open box’ RME on eBay for < $2k but after some soul searching and with the help of many here, I bought the Old School and don’t regret it one bit.
It’s really taught me alot about Analog synths, is an absolutely beautiful machine, tons of utility with all of the 1/4" on the back and I subsequently added a 351.
Knowing me, if I bought the Voyager (didn’t have the money at the time anyway), I would spend most of my time flicking around among the 100’s of patches rather than learning how to play.
And I can get Midi into my Old School via the Mutlipedal (not that I’ve had the need for that).
Together the two represent a powerhouse of everything old and new with Moog.
EM,
What I want to do is to dump my entire bank of presets and have 896 users. I think after awhile, youd get to a point where you would neglect the presets and start from scratch each time.
That makes 2 of us - I plan on getting a used Tetra for just that reason. We’re adding “Tom Sawyer” to our set list, and I really don’t want to drag my Prophet '08 through the clubs for just one song. The factory DSI Tom Sawyer patch in the '08 & the Tetra rules - closest thing I’ve ever heard for replicating the famous Oberheim “growl” sweeping sound. I don’t mind taking my Phatty to gigs - it’s a tough little beastie, but the Prophet seems fairly delicate by comparison.
too lazy to read the hole thread but heres my input..
i got an RME back in january.. it sits right beside me, to the right of my nordlead (which i use to controll it).
If you dont have the space or money, just for the RME.. only reason i would see in getting the full kb voyager is if your going to be playing live synth in a band setup or you dont have any other keyboards to control it
Well.. I think if someone has the money to burn, then the KB version offers a tiny bit more functionality, but looks cool and like you said, can go be used without the need for a other controller… This dude has a LP so he does’nt really have a need for a KB really.
I personally think its about budget too… how much your willing to spend.. if your on a budget, I’d say, don’t be silly, just get a RME. Especially since the going rate for used RME’s (if ur not afraid to go used) is a ton cheaper than the price for one new. With the money you’d save, you could buy another RME, or a LP if you didn’t already have one.
Personally I’d much rather have a LP + RME then just one Voyager KB. Just my opinion.
The only thing that troubles me about that setup is the lack of aftertouch on the LP. I suppose it depends on your playing style but I like to use aftertouch.
I use my Virus ti2 polar as my main controller and want to keep it that way
The keyboard versions are gorgeous and I could have easily afforded to go that route instead, but I just found the RME to be best fit for my situation. No regrets ever since and it remains to this day as my favorite piece of gear!
I bought my voyager keyboard about a year ago and sometimes wish i bought the rme. I don’t really use the touch surface and the voyagers keyboard action is really crappy! If i had the rme i would connect a cheap midi keyboard (which should normally be better then the voyager’s keyboard) and then could use the velocity sensitivity which is completely unusable at the moment.
I must admit, that the voyager’s crappy keyboard is not always a problem. Usually i don’t play fast licks and i think that aftertouch is in any case better then velocity for controlling a synthesizer. But if you want to play an analog synthesizer in a virtuoso manner you better go with a cheap midi keyboard and the RME.
my bad.. There was something you posted around when I first got it that made me suspicious haha.. I actually bought mine used off a friend that bought his from a “really nice guy in Toronto” a while ago, so I just assumed haha.
