I just saw a cool video series on youtube breaking down the MG-1. I had no idea how awesome it was!! If Moog reissued it, it could easily make them billions of dollars!
Yeah, thatās Marc Doty. I bought my Moog Old School primarily because of how much passion the guy has for the original MiniMoog. Get over to his āchannelā on YouTube and have a look at some of the other vintage synths that he created vids for. Outstanding.
Best part is that if you shoot him a private message, heāll actually reply with a thoughtful response.
.
I just watched a few more of his videos. Heās great! He makes sure you really understand the synth heās showing. I see he sells a DVD. Anyone here ever order one from him?
I bought one when I was a kid and Radio Shack got rid of them for $250. I guess they originally were $500 and they didnāt sell in enough numbers, so much for making billions of dollars. It was a perfectly good basic synth with some interesting pros and cons in terms of features. I eventually sold it, missed the Moog sound and bought a used Memorymoog+.
Why not instead of reissuing that, just take note of the modulation features that make this synth interesting and include that on a better overall design.
One thing that I love about the MicroMoog is its AUTO function. It will just sample and repeat the last keyboard voltage until you turn it off. Move the mod wheel up and it becomes Sample and hold. I REALLY wish the Voyager would do that.
So take a lot of the special features that made each synth unique, note them and think about a new design that incorporates them all rather than reissuing what the general public considers āBudget synthsā.
Keep in mind that Im not dissing the MG1. I love the MicroMoog but it gets a poor reputation on a lot of places because of its simplicity, and 1 osc design, yet those people fail to mention the open system features which make the Micro a very nice synthesizer. So I wouldnāt ask for a reissue Micro, but take what makes it nice and incorporate it. Same goes for the MG1.
I suspect that a great deal of the charm of the MG-1 would be lost in a modern version. Undoubtedly, they would āupdateā it to make it marketable, and affordable. It seems crazy that an EXTREME budget synth from the past is likely to be an expensive synth today, but I think that would be the case if they made a new version anything like the old version.
Of course, I would beg them to give the damned thing a reasonable envelope section, if they did.
I am also a huge fan of the Micromoog, which Iāve oft stated is superior to nearly any budget monosynth due to its amazing modulation routings and the ability to modulate the filter with the oscillator, among other things.
