Recording synths + effects sends question.

I have always practiced the method of recording synths dry, and having each hardware effect unit on a send/return channel in ableton. This method was fine when I only had two moogerfoogers. Now, I have about a half dozen mooger/mini foogers. It seems like this is getting excessive. Should I keep expanding my interface to keep everything isolated? Or should I start grouping a few effects together, based on the combos I use most?

This is purely a matter of opinion, but I’d appreciate the voice of reason (if such a thing even exists.)

Although if I start recording everything wet, with no sends, it might force me to be more decisive. New creative challenges, and all.

My practice is if the effect is part of the performance, record a dry and effect track. If not, then just dry track, and record effects on their own tracks for each effect/performance. You end with a lot of tracks, but that’s what the computer is for  It also allows you to keep your I/O small, and your attention on one thing at a time during performance - if you like it that way.

I tend to record with effects; my feeling is that if I play it live that way, then is deserves to be recorded that way.

In your situation, I would try grouping first: the voice of reason is saying “do it with what you already have”
