Quick Help dialing in a patch?

Quick Help dialing in a patch?

Hey all:

I’ve had my phatty for a few years but as a bass player I still haven’t developed a full skillset for running a sorta complex analog synth.

My band is playing this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wr8ng2Fa2Do

It’s a variation on the old folk song Gospel Plow. We’ve got a gig coming up in a few days..

The opening 1:10 has a droning synth note (E i think) that fades in and then sustains pretty infinitely.

I want to cop this tone if possible, and then fatten it up if possible.

Last night I dialed in something kinda like it, but something was missing.

I started with the “00” patch on my Stage 1, and made the following changes:

OSC 1 and 2 WAVE about the same and midway
OSC 1 and 2 LEVEL maxed
OSC 1 on 16’
OSC 2 on 8’ and then OSC 2 PITCH near maxed - trying to tune in 3rd or whatever that chord is

A bit less resonance and cutoff to tame it a bit

VOL and FILTER ENV the same - ATTACK 3’oclock, NO DECAY, SUSTAIN maxed, DECAY maybe 3’oclock

I’ll be playing bass so I’m triggering the note with foot pedal. Currently using EP-2 expression till I get a proper footswitch.

It fades in right, then sustains till I take my foot off, then fades out.

The tuning seems right, but something’s missing. Is it the timbre? I was thinking I dont’ have the right mix of waveform or??

Anyway, if anyone has 10 minutes to listen to the first 5 seconds of the song and give me some suggestions I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

If you checked here 5 mins ago, you would have read a suggestion leading you down a pulse width modulation path (to increase intensity, fatness). I really couldn’t hear the sound you were talking about at 1:10 but then reread your email and noticed you said to listen to the beginning of the song.

If you’re talking about the drone in the intro, I think you can do this quite easily by selecting a single pole filter (instead of 4 pole), setting both OSC’s at 8’, both waves just above bottom around 430 each in precision mode, EGR amount at 3029 give or take, kb amt is at 2721, Attack quite a bit higher than 3/4s, and the frequency where you had it (max’ed at 4095)

I think the key is the single pole filter and a triangle’ish waveform. If you have a midi sysex player, I can send you the patch then let you tweak it to your liking. One key element is that I couldn’t get my patch as bright as the recording, likely some EQ is in order.

It almost sounds like a processed bagpipe (deep bellowing reed sound)

If you have Red Hot Chili Peppers, listen to the intro/drone on the song “if” on Stadium Arcadium, it’s a similar vibe.

Thanks EM! Yeah I mean the drone during the first 1:10 of the song, so right at the beginning to clarify.

I fooled with the waveforms a bit more at practice last night, and got it sounding a bit better - it’s interesting how much that effects the “fatness”.

Were you playing the second “E” on the keyboard? That’s the octave I was playing - and on the octave selection I think either even up or second to lowest - I don’t recall. Sorry, my command of the keyboard is lame - I’m a bass player!

So I thought that the two oscillators would be on different “octaves” - I never tried having both on 8’ and that explains why my patch was a bit lower in tone. I’ll give that a try.

Changing the filter is a good idea - I’ll have to dust off my manual and figure out how to change it.

Thanks for taking the time to help a noob - I want to integrate the phatty and my moogers more into our stuff, I just need about 6 months off from work to figure out how to use it all.

At 8’ and 8’, it’s the low E.

The Filter Pole settings are in the Advanced Preset menu under Master.

So on the patch you want to change it for:

  • press the master button (next to the preset button)
  • rotate the knob until you get to “Advanced Preset”
  • press the CURSOR button, then rotate the knob until you get to: “Filter Poles: x”
  • press the CURSOR button again, then rotate the knob until the setting is “1” (most patches have this a 4 or 2).

It’s a bit tricky to navigate through these nested menus.

Let me know how it works out.
