You could easily update the operating system to vers. 3.3. That’s free. The main difference is the extra preset memory which is a $345 upgrade. If you don’t need the 700-ish extra presets, then you can play without the upgrade. I’m not sure, but I believe the newest Voyagers have a more responsive aftertouch. There’s also a glide/filter upgrade. These last two upgrades aren’t too expensive. None of the upgrades are really that critical, but I suppose that depends on your needs. I only went for the memory upgrade. I think you will find that the free vers. 3.3 software upgrade will offer many useful tools.
If you can get a good price on the Voyager, it would be worth it. I would say it should be at least $500 less than a current model.
It still has OS 1.0 on it… Which edition is it? Signature? Performer? Anniversary? Along with the other incredibly minor issues/upgrades Mark mentioned, there’s one more: the earliest models had a defect in the master volume control. Namely, @ the 12:00 o’clock position, there is a noticable click. Once again, an easy, cheap fix.
RE: value. No matter which edition it is, it should go for less than a new one. Certainly at least $345 less (the memory upgrade). Plus the extra hassle of updating the operating system (IIRC, you have to update to ALL the previous versions before installing the current one…). Guitar Center wants $2900US for a current Performer Edition. I’d ask for two grand and go from there… You say it’s been there since 2002. I bought my Signature edition the beginning of 2003 (40th b-day present to myself!) and paid about $2500 through EMF. Frankly, the main reason I bought the Signature version was that it came out a few months before the Performer. And I got to pick the wood (the maple is beautiful). Oh, and it’s been signed by Bob Moog
About 3 years ago I lucked out and bought my new Anniversary Edition from a music store that was going out of business. I paid $2250. The large (now discontinued) flight case cost me $250. I did get the 3.0 upgrade later on. They had sold a Performer a week before for about $1900. Good deals can be had if you look or luck out.
Yeah I am reasonably sure that it’s a perfomer edition walnut style wood. I did not notice any click in the volume when I was checking it out, but then again I was not looking for it.
