Processing for the Voyager

Hi all,

I am about to buy a Manley Massive Passive to EQ my Voyager as well as the other synthesizers that I have. As a matter of fact EQ might not be a proper word here because I want to sculpt the sound with it and see what kind of sounds I can come up with. Of course I will be using it as a normal EQ, too.

I would be very intersted to know what outboard units do you use with your Voyager? EQ/compressors/preamplifiers… and mainly in what way? Are you using them ro roll-off highs, to give it a little bit of oomph or…?

Do you use parallel compression with the Voyager?

Share your opinions + techniques.

I run my Voyager through stompboxes mainly but in the “filtering” department I use a Frostwave Resonator (MS20 clone filter) that I find does a nice job with the Voyager. I don’t use it all the time but since it can be controlled by CV and has a high and lowpass filter and a mix knob it can really fatten up the sound and make for some interesting effects. It sounds much different than the Moog filter and is a nice complement to it, IMO.

I also have a little ART tube mic preamp that I have yet to run the Voyager through but might try that now too - that sounds great with my bass so it might work well with the Voyager as well.

If you can get onto the new Yahoo group, KnobTweak, you’ll probably find a great article by GregAE on using the Voyager with an Aural Exciter.

Be sure to use the MIXER OUT/FILTER IN jack.

Sometimes I run the Voyager through my ROlans cube 30 bass amp for the compression and some effects, but I haven’t since I got the delay pedal. The Roland Vx840 also has some effects and things of that nature too.

The Massive Passive is a great tool.
I’ve had a lot of luck the Chandler TG Channel. There really isn’t a bad setting on its eq. You can do some great sound shaping by really driving the input for some crunch.
The Chandler Germ Compressor is also a great tool for synths cause it can do some pretty extreme stuff and with the mix knob you can get your parallel compression going which at times can be nice.
The Summit dual channel eq is really nice for warmer synth sounds.

The Alembic Superfilter is pretty neato, too. It has 2 filters that you can run in parallel or series, LP, HP, or BP, adjustable damping, and the ability to have only filtered sound, or a mixture of filtered and unfiltered. It’s fantastic on bass guitar, but it sounds pretty keen on other instruments, too.

Besides foogers, I frequently run my RME through the Sherman Filterbank II and/or the Malekko B:assmaster. Both complement the moog nicely.

Just got a #1 Echo by Electro-Harmonix, and for a digi-delay it really is nice-sounding. Kinda sounds Flock of Seagulls-ish. :sunglasses:
