Problems with Poly Chain Sub 37 + Minitaur

I think I’m having problems getting the Poly Chain to function correctly with the Sub 37 + Minitaur combo. I’m new to Polychaining, so excuse me if I’m doing something wrong.

Here’s the settings and results:

Case #1:
Sub37 POLY NUMBER = 2
Sub37 POLY MAX = 2

Minitaur POLY VOICE NUMBER = 1
Minitaur POLY VOICE MAX = 2

RESULT: 1st note played = Minitaur ONLY plays; 2nd note played = BOTH Minitaur and Sub37 play a note

Case #2:
Sub37 POLY NUMBER = 1
Sub37 POLY MAX = 2

Minitaur POLY VOICE NUMBER = 2
Minitaur POLY VOICE MAX = 2

RESULT: 1st note played = Sub37 ONLY plays; 2nd note played = NEITHER the Minitaur or Sub37 play a note

Both the Minitaur and Sub37 are set to MIDI Channel #1 (is this correct?). Changing the Minitaur to MIDI Channel #2 doesn’t seem to make a difference. Both are connected to the same PC via USB and the MIDI OUT of the SUB 37 is connected to the MIDI IN of the Minitaur via a MIDI Cable.

Minitaur Firmware = 2.1.4
Minitaur Software Editor = 3.0.4

Sub37 Firmware = 1.1.14
Sub37 Software Editor = 0.9.33

Thanks!

*** UPDATE ***

Just updated the Sub37 to firmware / editor 1.1.16/0.9.36 and this seems to have fixed the poly chain problem. Still testing, but so far everything appears to be working properly now.

Thanks Moog !

*** Update #2 ***

I may have spoken too soon. The poly chain issue has cropped up again. Everything was working correctly, then I enabled the Push 2 controller as the KB Controller in the Sub37 Editor. Now with the Sub37 as Poly# 1 and the Minitaur as Poly#2, the 1st note plays NEITHER the Sub 37 or the Minitaur and the 2nd note plays BOTH instruments.

I have set the KB Controller back to “NONE” and the behavior hasn’t changed; it still doesn’t work correctly.

It would seem there is some MIDI issue with the KB Controller. Don’t know if it’s specific to the Push 2. I have an AKAI APC Mini here somewhere that I may try to hook up and see if that makes a difference.

I’ll try resetting everything back to defaults, etc in the morning. It’s past my bedtime

couple of things…

  1. we’re working on a new Minitaur firmware, to begin testing as soon as Sub 37 editor is released. This has improved poly-chain code, which may help. (possibly there is room for improvement on Sub 37 too, but we’ll have to test and see).

  2. any time the poly notes get “out of sync” like this, just send an All Notes Off to reset the note counters on all units. If you are using the Sub 37 as your keyboard, you can press and hold both the KB Octave buttons for 1 second and it will send an All Notes Off. This should get the notes playing in the correct order again.

Hi Amos,

I did try this at one point with the older firmware and either I didn’t hold the 2 buttons long enough or it didn’t work. I will try this with the new firmware if it comes up and let you know.

Thanks,

The poly chain feature does seem to be working better with the new firmware. However, I’m finding it very easy to get the Sub37 and Minitaur “out of sync” with each other so that I do have to send the “All Notes Off” MIDI command via the 2 KB Octave buttons quite frequently. I know that I have to change my technique somewhat with Poly chain, but it still seems a little buggy. BTW, I wasn’t holding the KB Octave buttons long enough previously, so this may have worked with the earlier firmware. Just chalk that one up to “operator error” !

I’m going to add the Slim Phatty into the poly chain and see how that works and will report back.

Keep up the great work!

hey, thanks a bunch for digging into this.

try just slim phatty and sub 37 and see if it behaves the same/different as sub 37 and minitaur.

I can see there’s some difference in the poly-chain code between sub 37 and minitaur, so that could explain them getting out of sync in some circumstances.

we’re working on some behind the scenes improvements to our poly chain code base;
the goal is to get the new code integrated across all models (Sub 37, Sub Phatty and Minitaur anyway) in coming updates.
