problems using phatty with ableton live and the midi in/out

so heres what im trying to do. i use the tap tempo in ableton, and i play a midi loop out of ableton out of my midisport 2x2s out, goin into phattys in. i am using ableton to play the little phattys sounds. not any sounds in ableton. i play the loop for however long the song needs, and then with my right hand i hit the space bar in ableton to stop the loop, and i take over playin live with my left hand. sounds easy enough right? when the loop is playing, there is a little sideways triangle sorta play button in the bottom left of the display. anyways. heres where my problem shows up. i stop the loop and the keyboard on my little phatty doesnt respond. the only way ive figured out how to get the phatty to start responding to me playing live is if i turn the volume knob up or down at all. this doesnt work for me. i need to play the loop, and immediately on its completion when i stop the loop, i need to seamlessly keep the notes going. i dont have any midi from the phatty being sent back into ableton, so i dont think there is any bad midi loopback stuff going on at all. the only thing i am using is the midi out of the 2x2 going into the midi in on the phatty.

any ideas? it seems like this should just work, but it doesnt.

thanks for your time in advance…

so in a nutshell, i want the little phattys internal sounds to be played by the keys on the little phatty, and by the midi in on the side or the usb in.

this is driving me insane. the sound that it makes the little phatty make also fades in and out over the course of the loop. very wierd. i think ableton is sending some stuff to the moog that it doesnt need. its very wierd.

check your MIDI clip, click on the little “e” for envelopes and look for stray MIDI controller data. Delete any controllers you don’t want (like cc7: volume might be a problem here).

If adjusting the volume knob is bringing the Phatty back, then it does sound like Live is sending it a CC7 = 0 (zero volume) message.

If you are using Live 7, you might want to try messing with the “external instrument” contraption; this works kind of like a combination MIDI and audio track all in one… I have had some good luck using my Phatty with Live in this way. You could hook up the USB or both MIDI in and out, then turn off Local Control on the Phatty… on the other hand this might be more complicated then what you are doing now, where only the volume going silent seems to be the problem. Also, make sure you’re not using USB and the DIN MIDI both connected to Live at the same time, or at least choose your MIDI inputs and outputs per track (in the i/o section; usually MIDI in is set to “all inputs” but you might want to specify only one or the other) carefully so as not to get any confusing conflicts happening.

Let me know how this works out!

Cheers,

Amos
