Problems routing Minitaur/MIDI controller in Reason 7

I’m a complete newb when it comes to setting up external gear. I just recently purchased the Moog Minitaur, and I want to be able to play notes through the minitaur using my Akai MPK49 midi controller. As of now, I have a 5-prong midi cable coming OUT of my MPK and IN to the Minitaur. Then I have the Minitaur plugged straight into my Macbook via USB.

In Reason 7, I create an External MIDI instrument, and I can select “Moog Minitaur” from the dropdown box. However, when I press a key on my MPK, the External Instrument doesnt show a read out. However, on the Moog itself, the MIDI section lights up when I press a key, so I know that the Minitaur is receiving MIDI data from the MPK. When I go to “preferences” in Reason, the MIDi auto-detect does not detect either the Minitaur or the MPK49.

What am I doing wrong?? Any suggestions are much appreciated!

The way I would normally set this kind of thing up is MIDI out of the MPK49 into the computer, then computer MIDI out to the Minitaur. You would require either to have both devices hooked to the computer via USB, or use a standard MIDI interface and connect that way, but either should work.

I’m not trying to insult your intelligence so forgive me for asking, but you don’t say anything about audio I/O, and of course you do know that the USB/MIDI on both devices do not transmit audio, so you will not hear anything unless the audio output Minitaur is going into your computer also.

You’re not seeing MIDI in Reason because MIDI does not automatically pass through from one device to the next, in your setup only the Minitaur is seeing the MIDI, not Reason.

That said, you’re question can probably be answered in better detail on the Propellerhead forum…I haven’t used Reason 7 yet…waiting for my upgrade, still on 6.5…
