Presets

So, another noob question: When editing a preset, it will always revert to the preset unless you save your changes, correct? So if I select a preset, play with other controls, then move to another preset, it will not save the changes that I made unless I specifically tell it to save them?

Yup.

Ok, cool… I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn’t mess up the presets.

And that is why there’s the factory reset feature! Of course, if you have any custom presets, and you mess one preset up, and do a factory reset, you lose ALL your custom presets. :open_mouth: So it’s best to use that as a last resort.

It’s always a good idea to make a back up of your presets, the LP will allow you to send one at a time or the whole bank. There are several free programs out there for this. In the PC world MIDI OX works great.

Also don’t forget to back up your bank with Midi-OX before you load a sysex into your LP, because sometimes you might load a whole bank while thinking you’re only loading a single patch!

And if it’s not backed up in two or more places… It’s not backed up.

If you do loose them, just make an entire new batch of presets.

…either way always fun to make a new bank of presets

I’m working on new ones right now, good fun!

So how do you back up the presets? Is there a specific output on the Moog that will connect to the computer?

The USB port connects to the computer. It can send MIDI information. Or you can use something like the M-Audio UNO, which is a USB MIDI adapter.

So should I use that MIDI-OX program to transfer it? Or does the computer just see the LP as a storage device and allow me to copy its data?

You should use MIDI-OX.

On the topic of connecting to the computer; one last question:
I have Pro Tools and the original DigiDesign M-Box for home recording, but the M-Box doesn’t have any MIDI inputs. What would be the best way to connect the LP to record? Through the audio-out using a 1/4" cable, or should I find a MIDI-to-USB converter?
Sorry for all the questions, but I want to learn as much as I possibly can about the LP.

Well, you already have a USB MIDI interface (your Little Phatty) so if you want to record a MIDI triggered sequence/sound/whatever you only need to plug the audio out of the Moog to the audio in on your M-Box and your good to go.

So you don’t need to use a MIDI cable to record music? Sweet, that makes it easy!

You CAN’T use MIDI. The signal path for the audio is 100% analog. MIDI is digital. So while the LP CAN send MIDI signals, those signals cannot be used to transmit audio. I’m sure there’s a better way to explain it, but that’s how my brain works…not very efficiently. Which is why I’m so good at working for the government.

I’m sure there’s a better way to explain it

MIDI is a signal which transmits data (note/velocity/etcetera information), not an audio signal. Therefore you can’t record sound through a MIDI cable, you will always need an audio signal.

You can see MIDI as “the fingers that are playing the synth”, rather than the synth itself. What it sounds like is totally depending on what synth you are putting under the fingers …
