can anybody tell me where I can get original LEDs for my PM or other ones with the same height and diameter ?
My tech has told me this standard isn’t available any more for a long time now.
In the '90 I tried to solder some into with the European standard that are about double or one third higher, and it dindn’t work because of too little space between the PCB and the upper panel.
So I had to saw off the top with a fret saw for fitting and they’re not fine as they are more powerful and shiny than the other originals in the row.
There was the other possibility to lay them flat down sidewise, but I didn’t and don’t want to do like.
Can anybody tell me where I can get still these lower sized “originals” but with the same diameter ?
Thank you, but I don’t think at all.
In first place he’s one of the No1 specialists who has to repair the absolutely wrong fixings of many other techs of the last decades of all the vintages before he can do his own work, and secondly he’s very humble when he’s telling that he can’t know everything.
Give him a razor from the 40s or the 50s and he’ll tell you immediately abaout all components if they’re good or bad or still available or not.
Persons kind of these aren’t numerous on this planet.
Besides I can also tell you that at the same time he’s about to develop drastic innovations and upgradings for vintage synths like i.ex. the “Panorama - Stereo” for the Chroma I’m expecting now to be finished very soon. And there are more extraordinary things to come in the next time…
But you are telling that I can get them in every store for electronic parts ???
There is an auction now on Ebay with three OEM Polymoog LED’s.
Auction link here: Ploymoog LED auction
They look like any other LED, but I am no expert on any Norlin era Moog product. The seller says he will sell larger quantities after winning auction.
BRAVO MC !!! And thank you both for the hints and links
You’ve reconized correctly, this on ebay is exactly what I had to prepare for the fit in the 90s.
I had some correspondences with that man who wants to sell, and I doubted because of my experiences that they’d fit.
He grew very, very angry and nearly got crazy at the end so that any apologize helped at all. That man couldn’t have been brought back on the ground by no means…
He assured several times he had fixed sooooo many Polymoogs in the past and he’d know very well about them and they’d fit at any rate.
I’m lucky even more now that I didn’t take share in the auction.
That man could also be even more lucky not to be here in my area as I would have ordered to put him a strait jacket on… .
MC,
could you be so kind (or s.o else) and give me the exact sizes and dimensions from as I havn’t the proper tools to measure absolute precisely and randomize into inches.
I don’t want to do s.th. wrong as I want to order a big bulk.
Because of all that happiness that I can get now some I want to decorate also my house fully with them like a Christmas tree…
LOVELY !!! YOU’RE GREAT !!!
Hope the colour and lux will fit.
I’ve bought some parts of an English guy last year and two “original ???” LEDs with almost the same size, but their colour is going very slightly into rose and the dome is slightly more spiky. I didn’t yet put them in.
Maybe another producer ??? Made in England ? I don’t know…
Anyway,… I’m really happy now…
It would actually be a good idea to replace all the PM LEDs with new ones which draw a lot less current to help out the strain on the old power supply… I was thinking of doing this on my Memorymoogs…
Great ideas and very reasonable, exspecially vital for the lifetime of the electronics.
A customer of my tech has swapped a huge number of ICs in his Polymoog with modern ones and has now a reduction of about 180 W power. Fine for the portmonnai…
But I don’t know if he has a new PSU. Maybe…
Can you, MC, or anybody else tell me how I can destine the proper brightness of the LEDs I’m intending to buy as it’s obviously not possible to divert the “candelar” or “lux” from the other power-values.
What do the originals have ? There’s anything written in the schematics…
I use Vishay brand LED’s that I highly recommend, I use these in all my polymoog restorations and like them because they are smaller than the originals and you do not have to worry about them damaging the interface panel like the originals would. These run great with the original resistor values in place as well. The life of these LED’s seem to be great as well, I use my personal polymoog everyday and I have been running it for 4 years now without any burning out.
The part # is TLUO2401
They are available at mouser as well..here is a direct link:
Thank you so much, synthpro
I’m just now about to order 50 of the following from digikey: LUMEX 67 - 1088 - ND 5 mCandela
My tech and I came to the conclusion that 5mCandela would come close to the originals as they’re pretty dark.
As I’ve seen now that those you have in your Poly have also 4-5 mCandela. Is this brightness o.k. ?
But I’ve neve heared of that the originals could damage the interface ??? Also never happened to mine ?
