Plugging Voyager into Audio Interface

Hey guys, I want to buy a voyager, but I’m not buying one until I know what cables i need in order to plug it into my audio interface and get good quality. I’m literally holding off on buying one until I know for sure (I hope to buy one this week). I have an RME Babyface audio interface. It seems like I have two options?–using the instrument input on the side of the babyface or the xlr inputs that are part of the babyface’s breakout cable? I have an instrument cable so I would think I’m all set with the first option?

In this thread: http://www.moogmusic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=11809
someone recommended getting a 1/4 TS cable and connecting it to a DI Box and then connecting that to the XLRs (this thread was for the Moog LP but i imagine the same applies to the voyager).

In another thread someone again mentioned the DI Box and they recommended a DI box with a Jensen Transformer
(thread is here) http://www.moogmusic.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12881

I checked the moog voyager manual and it says you need 1/4 instrument cables. Does this mean moog is recommending using the instrument input (do instrument cables go into instrument inputs?) ?

poop

Please someone tell me what cables I need! Thanks

According to the manual the L & R audio output jacks on all Voyager keyboards are 1/4" unbalanced TS jacks. On the RME they are TRS apparently.
I have plugged them directly into my active monitors in the past but they usually run directly into my instrument level inputs on my mixer. Personally I wouldn’t recommend plugging them into an XLR input as they might have phantom power acciddently switched on, depending on the input.

Thanks. So if i do as you recommend, then i’d need a 1/4 TS cable which would go into the voyager and then into the instrument input of my babyface. The instrument input is also high impedance and unbalanced, but is a TRS input according to the babyface manual. I hope this doesn’t affect things? Also, i’m wondering if there is a benefit to plugging in 2 TS cables into the voyager (for stereo) as opposed to one? If i put on a pair of headphones and play the voyager through my daw with only 1 TS cable plugged into it (mono)…am i only gonna hear through one ear?

Well i bought 1/4 TS cables and a used moog voyager for 2700 from sweetwater. If i need different cables i can buy them later ;p. yay !

The benefit of using both the L & R outputs of the Voyager become evident once you listen to many of the patches the Voyager has (or start tweaking parameters yourself) in stereo. There are some wonderful sonic panning effects that can be achieved with the Voyager!

Edit: if you only use the mono cable, the ‘position’ of your sound will depend on where you have the panning set on your daw or mixer for that input, you will however miss out on the true stereo effect.
