Phatty sighting...

Not on TV; I always get a rise seeing a Phatty used by a major act on either Letterman or other late night shows.

This time it was at a bar/restaurant in Jersey City; some mexican place that on Friday night has music. A group of young guys playing electronic/house/afro hipster stuff. Electronic drums (playing live on some low-cost roland pads and an octapad w/what sounded like 808 samples), a front guy playing keys, Ableton, and a dude on a black Phatty keeping it real.

Really tight, good groves. It’s great to see somebody that likely can barely afford equipment have an LP. They easily could have had an all VST setup or a lower cost VA like a MicroKorg but nope. Good to see…

I like Paul Shaffers voyager.
Rarely uses it though. :arrow_right: Idiot

I saw matisyahu 2 or 3 years ago. Had a LP set up on stage. It went unplayed, untriggered, no external sounds fed through the filter. :imp:

P-funk always has a voyager set up for live shows. All the squirrelly Bernie style leads and basses are now done on a voyager instead of a model D.

I saw/heard voyager at a local bar in the past year. Made me smile. Though, it was used in a vanilla sort of way.

Page McConnell from Phish had an LP in his set up 2 years or so ago.

I distinctly heard and after the show confirmed a Midi MuRF in Mickey Hart’s rig this past January at a Mickey Hart Band show. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ive paused and looked at the settings on Pau’ls voyager and he has osc 1 off and some other things I’m trying to figure out why he would have done that.

I’ve been able to come up with some pretty interesting sounds with Osc 1 off… I have this one patch that I call the up speak patch…I have the filter envelope modulating the pitch in such a way that the pitch starts off lower than the key pressed then rises up to be in tune… You cant do it with OSC 1 on because then OSC 1 would be too far out of tune during the sustain part of the envelope…

Cheers.

In his case, it’s just a prop. I think I saw him play it once and I can’t even remember what it was he was playing, certainly was not taking a prominent role in whatever song it was. I thought he would have replaced it with an XL, but nooo…

Here’s a clip from KB Mag.: http://www.keyboardmag.com/article/Paul-Shaffers-Letterman-Keyboard-Rig/1838 He plays his Voyager for about 4 seconds. (he seems to be a bit… um… lethargic : )

I like seeing how Nine Inch Nails (my favorite band) used the Little Phatty Stage II live as the bassist’s bass synth in their recent tours.. Seems like it’s the perfect synth for that job!

NIN fan here as well, although I haven’t been following the latest tours.
Doing the bass duties in a rock band with a monophonic analogue: that is one of my projects. Some day

Saw Return To Forever live last year, playing with Zappa Plays Zappa. While Dweezil was on stage, Chick Corea came out and jammed with him for a bit. He did an extended solo on a Phatty. It was awesome.
