I’m looking for an analog phaser to do those deep shwooshey phaser sweeps on string pads like Jarre. DSP phasers in my keyboards are not doing it for me. Is the 103 good for this? Is it noisy? Does LFO amount on 0 really remove the LFO entirely?
I dunno if the 103 is good for JMJ sounds in particular, but it is possibly the best phaser…and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t even LIKE phasers. If deep swooshes is what you’re after then the 103 is definitely for you.
Phasers are pretty corny, I agree with you there Voltor07 But I think it was thin digital phaser fx with weak epiano samples which put me off. Most users of those actually want a rotary speaker effect and the phaser is similar. I’m looking for mind bending swoosh.
The MF-103 is a very nice Phaser, but for those really ‘deep, shwooshey, mind-bending’ string pad effects, you want the EH Small Stone. I’m pretty sure it’s the one that JMJ uses to get that sound. If not, it’s awfully close.
iirc, the JMJ phaser sound is Small Stone. Keep in mind there are several editions of just the American version, so it helps to do a bit of background
before buying:
Thanks for the suggestions of the EH Small Stone, Greg and Lawrence.
I recently played the DVD of the remastered Oxygene and JMJ explains some of the equipment - it looks like an EH Electric Mistress. EDIT – no just changed my mind, its a Small Stone. The trouble is that its not just any old Small Stone or Electric Mistress, we all know that reissues and modern versions can completely lose the vibe of a treasured piece of gear.
I shouldn’t say it on this board, but I’m fairly happy with the Roland V-Synth’s ‘Analog Phaser’ effect, very deep swooshing indeed.
I have and use an EH Small Stone (the standard size, not the Nano version). This pedal - purchased last year - may or may not have the same circuitry as a vintage Small Stone, but it still creates that mind-bending, over-the-top swoosh that works so well for strings, white noise, etc.
From the JMJ “Oxygen: Live in your Living Room” DVD: a Small Stone phaser is seen next to an EH Electric Mistress. Can’t tell if the Voyager in the shot is being processed through these devices, though:
I’ve had a play with various digital phasers and it seems to me that most of the big effect is when the output of the phaser is stereo. Most stomp boxes including the revered EH Small Stone don’t offer this. The MF103 does.
Could somebody record a few seconds of white noise thru a MF phaser on slow sweep with main and aux going to left and right? If I could hear it, I would know if its the sound I am after. Guitar samples just don’t help.
I’m pretty sure those EH pedals are used solely for processing the Eminent organ / string ensemble. And yes, if you want THAT Jarre phaser, you should get a Small Stone.
Having played with some stereo phaser effects, I think the sensible solution is to buy TWO Small Stones. Stereo phasing is amazing and having out of sync sweeps on left and right is great.
