I’m thinking of getting a chorus stompbox for my LP, I have a Lexicon MX200 which is great for reverb/delay, but the chorus in it is not the best. I’d like a warm, bright chorus like you can get from a guitar stompbox. I’m considering Digitech Chorus Factory and Boss Chorus Ensemble (either CE-5 or CE-20 double). What do you think of those? Any Chorus pedal recomendations or other chorus FX units?
And a general question regarding usage of guitar stompboxes with synths. Isn’t there a problem with input impedace? The signal form a synth is much stronger then a guitar, will stompboxes work without overdriving? (cause I see peaople write about using stompboxes all the time and I was curious about this issue for a while)
Does anyone use Amp/Speaker Simulators with synths? My MicroBR recorder has a JC-120 Jazz Chorus simulation built in and it sounds great.
No recommendation on the chorus pedal - too many choices here. But doesn’t the Digitech pedal simulate many different chorus pedals (Boos, Digitech, DOD, etc.)? Seems like it might be worthwhile having several models to choose from.
i agree - the MX200 IS a bit weak in the chorus department, but is otherwise a great little multi-effects box.
I’ve not noticed a problem with any stompbox I’ve used with the Voyager, save for the MXR Phase 90 (the little orange box), which is easily overdriven. No problems with any of the Line 6 pedals (I have the Echo Park and Liqua-Flange), Akai (E2 HeadRush), Roland (CE-3 Chorus and PH-1 Phaser), or BBE (Sonic Stomp). I’ve also used a number of OverDrive/Distortion pedals with the Vger with good results (of course, these are designed to distort…)
As you’ve discovered, Amp/Speaker sims are great ways to change-up your sound. I use a Line 6 POD (guitar amp sim) as well as a ZOOM B2 (bass amp sim) to great effect. The B2 is especially nice with Voyager bass sounds. I also have a Roland VF-1, a half-rack multi-effect unit with plenty of built-in amp sims. A favorite combo is the Voyager patch called “Offramp” (from the TWolfe bank) with a VF-1 patch called “Mellow Attack” (based on a clean Fender Twin amp), producing the Pat Metheny guitar synth sound. You can hear an example and read about the details on MoogSpace:
Lastly, If you’re into stompboxes, check out ‘Guitar Effects Pedals - the practical handbook’ by Dave Hunter. A great resource on all the classic stompboxes and current ones (oddly, without any mention of the Moogfooger pedals - hhhmmmm)
Well you cant go wrong with the classic roland chorus, so that would be my first choice.
You could also try the electro harmonix small clone or stereo polychorus which no doubt sound amazing as well.
On the amp sim front id personally go for a sansamp (maybe the bass driver model) as it has the extended frequency range for bass/keys.
I use my LP SE with a clone (made in Argentina) of Electro Hamonix Small Clone. It´s sounds great. The is made by Cluster. Is cheap, but sounds great (its has an analog feel) and very robust. You can check it at http://www.efectoscluster.com.ar/efectos/chorus/spirit-92
