Output level control?

I’ve always wondered why some of the moogers have output level knobs and drive knobs and the rest just have drive knobs with no out put control. Anybody have any answers?

I was thinking about this and here is my theory…of corse its not bhased on ANY facts whatsoever.

THe 101 and the 102 were the first ones to come out. THe Phaser comes out with Stereo outputs, so they included an output level. They kept that feature on the 104z and on the 105 and 107. THey probably haven’t revamped the design of the first two.

This is my theory, though Id like to see a timeline of the release of the FOogers.

I wonder if the 101 and 102 could be modded easily to have out put control? I like going from clean to nasty filter and that would make that so much more convient than getting another pedal to bypass it

It probably could. Id ask Amos if he can do it.

ill just add this to my gear wish list. although this might my a little more obtainable

I know that when I send in my Theremin to get Modded at the end of the month or so…Im going to definately ask if they can install a bypass switch to bypass the voltage outs so in the middle of a recording I can reach down, flip the swotch and my patch cords already there can do their thing.

The block diagram on my MF-102 shows that the drive knob controls the input amp, and that the input amp feeds the incoming audio signal into the bypass circuit and the ring mod circuit. It also shows a Bypass VCA in the bypass circuit.

So, if I had to guess why the MF-102 doesn’t need an output level knob, it’s because the signal gain is equal in both the bypass circuit, and the ring mod circuit. If the levels are already equal, you don’t need an output level adjustment to balance them at the output, which is exactly what the output level on my MF-103 is used for.

I wish my 101 had an output level control. Driving the filter differently yields different sounds, but keeping things at unity gain would be good.

it would be nice to have when driving either the ring mod or lowpass into distortion so you can have a little more volume control

I’m sure Amos could custom fit a knob for output control. I find my 102 distorts quite nicely as it is. So I’m actually happy with my 'Foogers just as they are, if you can believe that! :open_mouth:

that is VERY surprising lol

Look into clean boost pedals, like an EHX LPB-2 or MXR micro amp. Adding an output control wouldn’t change much as you would always have a louder signal at the output if the drive is cranked.

Adding a clean boost out front will drive the input harder, thus making it reach distortion. However this volume boost will then translate into everything down chain from the filter. To keep equal levels between driven filter and clean filter in an on the fly pedal scenario, you’d need a much more complicated set-up to achieve “unity” gain…
