Old School -- should I upgrade?

Hi,

I’m new here. I just purchased a used LP TE, SN#0108. It is pretty awesome!
In my home studio I’m really old-school. I run Cubase 6.5 (well, that’s not old school), but I do my guitars with an old Telecaster through an old VOX amp, and I play my pianos mostly with a Wurtlitzer 200 etc. I guess you get the type.

I’ve been reading this forum trying to figure out should I send my LP to Moog for the additional memory installation so that I could run the 3. something software – instead of the 1.03. I have not found any real reason to do that. What am I missing?

I haven’t compared them side by side so don’t want to speak out of turn because I’ll get beat up again : )
But if memory serves, the big differences include:

  • Arpeggiator
  • Alternate key tuning
  • Ability to send midi clock (have Phatty act as master clock in conjunction with Arp)
  • Not sure about subdivisions sync’ing LFO to Midi, may just do basic sync
  • Differing values for Pitch end up vs. down (maybe in the latest pre-2.x release?)
  • Ability to do Poly reliably and with the Slim Phattys (the algorithm changed drastically from the original)
  • 2.x+ may have the Noise source and S+H as alternate mod sources but that may exist in 1.04 or whatever version it is.

I have an LP TE with the 2.x upgrade and the CV out upgrade. I paid waaaaaay more than I’ll ever see again, some part of me wishes that I would have just stuck on the 1.0x version as it is more simplistic and did the job just fine. At this point, I’ve got a Voyager Old School, a bunch of foogers, some modular sequencing gear, T3, etc etc but if I had a somewhat more simple setup with no plans to buy other high end gear, I’d likely get better use from my pimped out TE.

One man’s opinion… as always your mileage will vary. Whichever way you go, you cannot go wrong, it’s a great platform and I honestly cannot see selling it (my 15 year old has her eye’s on it anyway so I have to watch my back hahahaha)
