Last week I bought a used Slim Phatty. I was exploring the waves this morning, and noticed that a pure triangle – doesn’t matter which oscillator – is surprisingly buzzy.
I made a quick recording here: http://virgil.org/dswo/noisytriangle.mp3. This is the calibration patch: one oscillator, no envelope, no modulation, filter all the way open, no overload on the filter. The only thing I have changed is the waveform: it’s a pure triangle (wave dial all the way counterclockwise). On the recording, I held the note for a second and then moved the wavedial slightly clockwise, just for reference. (Nice harmonics as it moves toward a saw!) Then I released the key (silence) and returned to the pure triangle. There’s that buzzing again, when it should be a pure tone. I checked with headphones plugged directly into the Slim Phatty, and it’s there too. (Meaning: the buzz is coming from the Slim Phatty, not the mixer, amp, or speakers.)
Is there something wrong with my unit? (I can return it.) Or are the Phatty oscillators just intrinsically noisy?
