No sound from Minitaur

I just purchased a Moog Minitaur and I have not been able to get a sound out of it. Also the oscillator buttons do not turn on when pressed. Once I got it out of the box I plugged it into my midi controller
as well as headphones into the headphone jack of the minitaur and recieved no sound when I hit some keys, the midi light did not turn on when I plugged it in as well. I tried plugging headphones into the audio out jack and still nothing. The next thing I tried was plugging it into my computer via the usb, when I plugged it in my computer recognized it and installed the drivers for it. I used midipiano to test it and still no sound. I then downloaded and ran the Minitaur editor from the moog website. When I pressed either the release or glide button on the minitaur it would do so as well on the editor which was a good sign but when I pressed any of the oscillator buttons they would not respond. Ive been trying everything for a couple hours to get it to make a sound. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a defective unit to me. I plugged in via MIDI and had sound immediately.

I’m curious where you downloaded the Minitaur editor, though. I’ve been unable to find it on the website.

Right out of the box, with nothing plugged into it except power supply, all buttons should respond to a press (light up). It is possible that the unit is bad. You should contact Moog Tech Support

Sounds like Local Control is off for some reason.
Send Midi CC 122, value 127, to turn on local control.

I am working on a firmware update where local control is always on on startup, to keep this from being a problem.

Also make sure the Minitaur is set to the correct MIDI channel; press all four panel buttons and they should all start blinking;
the Minitaur will learn the MIDI channel of the next MIDI message it receives. If you think you’re sending MIDI to the unit but the MIDI LED doesn’t light and (if you’re in MIDI channel learn mode) all the button LEDs continue flashing, it means you’re not really sending MIDI to the unit. Check your connections and so on.

Thanks everyone for responding. Well I turned on the Minitaur this morning and now the release button does not want to stay on it flickers a little then turns off. Well anyway I held down all four buttons, the oscillator buttons still do not turn on and the the release and glide buttons did not flash. I did try sending midi CC 122 to value 127 and now I get a slight staticy sound when I press any keys which I guess is better then no sound. I’ll keep fooling around with it and see if it improves.

Sounds DOA to me. Just have it replaced by the retailer you bought it from, believe me it will be worth the wait. None of that is normal. Provided your power and connections are good, that is very strange behavior.

Sounds like a loose ribbon cable to me. Definitely contact whomever you bought it from and/or Moog service.
My suspicion is that the cable may have been jarred partially out of place in shipping; that would explain all the symptoms.
If the retailer is not able to swap it out, talk to Service; they can walk you through re-seating the cable which could potentially save a lot of time and bother.

If it’s the same type of cable that is in the LP, good luck! Those things are tricky to properly seat. That was the reason I sent mine into the factory originally. I wish you the best of luck!

no, different type of cable in the Minitaur. less fiddly than the one you encountered…

Thank You Amos!!!
So I popped it open located the ribbon cable pushed it in carefully till it stopped. Put everything back together and powered it on. All lights went on and it recognized my controller immediately. It sounds so great!!! :sunglasses:

Oh, that’s good for the OP then.

another satisfied customer. good deal!

BASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
