No audio - trying to use SP to trigger Minitaur

(I wasn’t sure if this is really an SP issue or a Minitaur issue so I’ve posted this in both forums.)
Hello,

So I’m trying to trigger a Minitaur with a Sub Phatty using midi, but am getting no audio output from the Minitaur. Can somebody please tell me what I’m doing wrong? Here’s the situation:

  • The midi light on the Minitaur lights up with every keyboard input from the SP
  • I’m using the SP DIN out to the Minitaur DIN in. I’ve tried this with either unit also connected to a mac laptop via USB (to check editor settings), and also with no USB connection.
  • It seems to be a midi problem and not an audio problem. If I leave everything else the same but take the midi out from my Nord Stage II instead of the SP, I get an audio signal from the Minitaur as expected.
  • Ins and outs on Minitaur and SP are set to midi channel 1. By the way, in the Minitaur editor (when connected via USB), it won’t let me change the midi channel settings on the Minitaur. If I try to select another channel it just resets to 1. However there does seem to be a connection, because the Note Calibration function works.
  • Another observation - usually when connected as described above, the Minitaur midi light illuminates only when there is keyboard input. This is how it always worked when I’ve triggered it with the Nord. However, when connected to the SP, a time or two the midi light on the Minitaur began blinking almost constantly for minutes at a time, even though there had been no control surface inputs recently and no SP audio (no long releases etc). When it starts doing this, it doesn’t matter if there is also a USB connection or not. Does this issue seem related to my problem, and what sort of data would the SP be sending in the absence of any current or recent user input?

Would greatly appreciate any assistance in helping me sort this out. I’m a relative newbie so please keep it is as simple as possible.
Thanks!

Hi,

Maybe your Sub Phatty is sending notes out of the range of the Minitaur. Try to change the range using the octave up and down buttons in the Sub panel.

About the constant blinking issue, try to use a MIDI Monitor software to check what Sub Phatty is sending while is idle. Sometimes MIDI messages are sent from the Modulation or Pitch Bend wheels, if this is the case, try to move the wheel a little bit until it stops. I got a Studiologic keyboard with this problem and sometimes is hard to find the dead point.

I hope this helps and sorry for my English.

Alex

Hi thanks for your suggestions! Turns out the Minitaur had shipped with older firmware even though it was new, so I just needed to update the firmware…
