Let me start this post by saying that I am an utter newbie to the Moog world, so I hope this question doesn’t sound stupid. Also, my question may have been answered in this forum already but I have no idea what to search for or I would have.
I was in a music store the other day trying out a used LP Tribute Edition. I noticed that depending how hard I pressed a key on the keyboard the sound changed significantly - ranging from sounding very muted to very crisp with a “medium” press, then back to muted again if I pressed the note too hard.
Many of the presets seemed to be extremely touch sensitive like this. Is this “velocity” and is it a setting that can be changed on the keyboard? I really did not enjoy having to be super sensitive with the speed that I pushed a key down.
Again, I know this is a totally newbie question, but please help me out as I’m very interested in the synth! Thanks!
You can route velocity of the keypress (how hard you play a key) to filter cutoff (“muted” closed filter - low cutoff or “crisp” open filter - high cutoff).
You can set the amount of this in both directions (hard keypress filter opens or hard keypress filter closes and opposite for soft playing). This let’s you obviously get some expression into your playing.
But I’m suprissed that the velocity=filter curve didn’t go one way but was muted with soft playing, crisp in the middle and muted again with hard playing. That’s something I haven’t seen before.
Thank you PHC for your help! It was a used unit that had obviously been messed with by somebody, so who knows.
But yes, you had to press the key with just the “exact” amount of pressure to open up the cutoff filter → any more or less closed it off. It was just the most bizzarre thing because it made it extremely difficult to play. Thanks for clearing that up!
I also have a question. Does anyone know why velocity is routed to filter cutoff? Am I the only one that thinks that Velocity to Filter EG Amount would be a better option. More natural for acoustic instrument type expression and it would allow TB-303 sequencing among other things - accent on separate notes via velocity.
It would be great if a software update would allow switching between routing to cutoff and EG amount.
