New Voyager owner (Moog/Rhodes video)

Well I finally pulled the trigger on a Voyager! I’ve been playing it nonstop for the past 24hrs, and decided to post a short clip of some noodling with my trusty Rhodes piano.

Man I really really enjoyed that!
There is nothing in this world like a Moog and a Rhodes.

Your playing was fabulous.

Nice job. Very Chick/Spyro Gyra like but with your own touch.

Truer words have never been spoken.

Glad you guys dig it. I’m angry at myself for putting off buying the voyager for as long as I did. What an amazing synth. Plus the Moog customer service is tough to beat!

I like the color scheme also.

What year is your rhodes? I “inherited” (read claimed) a 71 suitcase seventy-three

This is an old pic:

Welcomr to the forum!

It’s a 79’ suitcase. I got lucky and found it in a local music store. Apparently it was owned by an old lady who never touched it. It was pretty much mint, but was in desperate need of a tuning/voicing…once I got started, I ended up replacing screws, grommets, damper felt, hammer tips, tolex, grille cloth, and added the backcheck mod.

Here’s a couple of pics, although I recently repainted the lid to the cream color in the video.

Nice set up. You’ll love the Voyager the more you it.

Have you down the PE update on your Prophet ? If not do it , Makes it like a new synth,

Thanks

I made sure to get the PE edition, after reading about the problems with the old knobs. The prophet is a cool synth for sure…I use it mostly for pads and little synthy bits that sit further back in the mix. It definitely has a “distinctive” sound. IMHO, the voyager blows it away when it comes to leads though. I think they will compliment each other nicely.

Very fine work ! Hard to believe that you “just got” your voyager- You have a really nice touch with it. And while I have never played a Rhoades, I am in awe at the sustain and tone. An excellent combination indeed !
Thanks !

^Thanks for the kind words. There’s nothing like a real Rhodes. They can be a pain to maintain/transport, but once you play the real deal, its tough to go back to the emulations (although there are some good ones out there these days). Luckily, mine mostly stays in the studio, so the maintenance is minimal. As EricK already stated, there is something magical about the Moog/Rhodes combo.

Great Stuff! D minor is my favorite scale!

I’d really like to know what exactly happens at 1:48!
What chord do you play in the left hand (seems to contain a c#) and what scale in the right?
I really like this effect (seems to be the same at 2:41) and also heard it on 70’s fusion records but never understood what happens.

Thanks! I had to go back and listen to that one. That’s a diminished lick that I like and do in a few different variations depending on the context. Basically, it is a Gdim scale over an F#maj 7th. I know there are a few extra notes thrown in there in the clip though. When I get a chance, I’ll try to pick through the video and send you the exact notes if I can. :stuck_out_tongue:

PM on the way Psicolor!

cool

thanx drcarver!

As a new member of the Magic-Combination-Owners-Club i recorded a new version of my tune “Mieser Trip”:

Not really virtuoso playing, albeit i guess you’ll enjoy the sounds.

Nice! I see I’m not the only one down with the Nag Champa!

How do you like your Mk7? I’ve been thinking about getting one…

The action of the Mk7 is great, it’s very easy to play and, as far as i can judge (i only know one Mk1 for comparison) its more expressive then the old pianos. The builtin Preamp is quite nice if you don’t turn up the volume too much (because then it starts to overdrive and this sounds really really ugly!). The EQ is very good quality and gives you many sounds which you can record directly (without amp/mic…)

But there are drawbacks as well: The glossy finish scares of, makes the piano look like a cheap apple product made by poor children with bloody hands. The road touch finish looks much better but it’s still plastic and far away from the mk1 wood and tolex sexiness. Also Leo Fender’s focus on practicable is missing: There’s no builtin case (you have to buy a seperate one) and the legs are missing. I asked my dealer for replacement parts such as tines (i don’t wanna gig with the piano without replacement tines) and didn’t hear anything from him since then. Seems that the supply of replacement parts is still not clearified. I don’t know where you live, but here in germany the pianos comes to the dealers in very bad condition. I would suggest to buy it from a piano dealer who does the initial tuning, voicing and repairs of damages that occured during the intercontinental transport.

Anyway, i like the piano a lot, I always wanted a rhodes but i didn’t like the action of the old ones. The Mk7 73 Active with builtin WOODEN case (every musician i know would prefer carrying heavy wood instead of looking at ugly plastic) and legs would be the piano of my dreams.

So long, Nag Champa for president!

That’s cool. I was wondering about the finish on them. I’ve spent a LOT of time getting my mk II playing and sounding great, but I was thinking it may be nice to have a 2nd Rhodes, and voicing it differently. Being lighter is nice also. Due to the weight, I hardly ever gig with my Rhodes anymore except for very special occasions. Supposedly Rhodes is unveiling a new instrument this week at Musikmesse. That could be interesting.
