Hi! I’m a pride new Little Phatty owner. This is my first analog synthesizer and I’m really happy with it!
After almost 1 long year of wait, I finally have it…
This is just a basic introduction… I’m from Brazil and this kind of equipment is really hard to get here. I’m a hobbyist musician and have had a lot of digital gears since 2008. My main instrument is the piano - I play classical piano since I was 10 (almost 23 now) - and my sinthesizers are basically for recording and jamming with friends.
My gear:
Roland V-Synth GT
Moog Little Phatty
iPad > Animoog
Boss Super Chorus CH-1
Boss Distortion DS-1
Boss Mega Distortion MD-1
I was hoping to get some answers here about some things (I know I could search for them, but my time is very limited):
Is there any pedal that you guys would recommend for the basic LP use?
I have these 3 guitar pedal’s (I used to play guitar in my youth), is any of them usable? Even Chorus? - I haven’t tested it yet because my cables where thrown away by mistake!
What do you guys think that would be a good speaker for the LP? Bass amp? Studio monitor?
Is there any recommendation about the keyboard itself? Sun sposure? Heat problem? Something else?
Closing this message, I’m just happy to be a Moog owner. I think it’s the dream of every real keyboard player. I hope I can share experiences and help other members here. Since I’m just new in the analog world, I think there’s a lot to learn.
You probably won’t get much use out of those distortion pedals, but that chorus should be fun to experiment with. Delay is one of the most important effects you can have, as it adds a lot of depth to your sound. I would suggest something from Electro Harmonix, but just try out different delays and get something you like. If you’re not able to demo them, just watch YouTube videos.
I’ve always had the best live results with a bass amp. For the studio I use headphones during tracking, and I mix with a set of computer speakers
@enossified
Yeah, I think I’ll give them a try!
I’m currently not using anything with the V-Synth besides headphones, since I just use it in a “studio” enviroment. I’m asking about the LP cause I think that the V-Synth will sound good enough in almost every monitor. I’m thinking about a KC-150 or something like it. I don’t need a gigantic speaker…
@Kenneth
With the distortion pedals, that quite much what I thought. Is the Chorus one replaced with a Memory Boy from EHX? This pedal is the one on my budget and my first idea. I’m going to try testing it with a bass amp and see what can I get. Here in Brazil they are cheaper than other things (like a good monitor for example). I’ll watch some Youtube videos searching for the Moog+EHX combination!
A delay pedal is a very good idea. Also, as to amps, a Roland KC series keyboard amp is one good choice, but a good bass amp and speaker cab is also a good choice. Just don’t use a guitar amp. Have fun, and go get a delay pedal right now!!
If you can get your hands on a second hand Line6 POD 2.0 you will get a lot (!) of good effects for a very good price.
The POD goes very well with the Phatty.
My girlfriend will be travelling to the US, so I’m thinking about buying 1-2 pedals… I’m decided for the EHX Memory Boy. Is there anything else I could look for?
@Assar
I don’t think I’m going for anything like digital modeling pedals. I’m searching for something that I can’t do with my GT. The analog delay is a perfect example. Thank you for the tip anyway.
@ricknboogie
I’ll try this little beast with both amps then! A reverb pedal would be redundant?
For amplification, I use a modified Phonic MK-50 keyboard amp. It not only has a custom 12" driver, but an additional output jack for an external speaker. It was very easy to add the jack. +1 to a delay. The chorus pedal may also be super useful.
I’m currently searching for a good WAH pedal for the LP. Does anyone use one with it?
I’m also searching for other pedal sugestions to work with the LP (except distortion ones).
I have tried my wah (BBE wah which is modeled after a VOX I think) a bit. An expression pedal connected to the filter CV is more expressive in my opinion.

I’ve had good luck with my Dan-O-Wah by Danelectro. I bought it new ages ago, but used ones can be found for fairly cheap. I don’t think they make them anymore.
Yeah, I know it! I’ll keep the filter open at first try, then later I’ll start experimenting other stuff.
@e3p0
I think they’re just different things. I know that an expression pedal is a good call, but I simply like the wah effect with some sounds. They’re very expensive in my Country (as everything else!).
@Voltor07
I was looking for the Dunlop Cry Baby, but can’t test it (I think they don’t have it at my local store - also, customer service here is horrible!). Can you select the filter range of the wah with your Danelectro? I’m trying to choose between a simple guitar wah or something more expensive wich allows me to select the range of the effect. What do you think?
The Dan-O-Wah is awesome. It has two rows of three switches, one row on each side. The silver selector button is used to choose which bank of wah types is used, either 60’s wah or 70’s wah. In addition, there is a fourth button that increases whichever wah effect is chosen. Really, you have a choice of 12 wah sounds in one pedal. It also has distortion, but that can be disabled. Wanna talk prices? I paid $110 NEW for my Dan-O-Wah in 2002 or 2003.
Thank you Voltor for your answer. I think it will be difficult for me to buy used gear simply because I’m thinking about ordering the products to be delivered to my girlfriend’s Hotel.
Through my research, I’ve become quite amazed with a few guitar pedal, all by EHX.
EHX Memory Boy
EHX Electric Mistress
EHX Holy Grail Nano
These are a bit expensive but maybe I’ll buy all of them! With the Wah thing, I was thinking about getting a standard Crybaby that is quite cheaper than the full featured one (half the price), since I beleave you get almost the same from them. I’m having a hard time to find synthesizer videos that show this kind of interation (pedal + keyboard)… can you guys share some with me?
EHX works great with Moog stuff. Everything I have seen from them is top notch. There are cheap analog delays out there too, the Carbon Copy delay and Aqua Puss come to mind. The MXR phasers are nice. I can’t neglect to mention that MoogerFoogers will expand your Control Voltage horizons and of those, the RingMod is always the most recommended. The graphic Fuzz is an awesome pedal, maybe not so much with a synth but with your other gear…
Any pedal will offer SOMETHING. I agree that you just have to try it. Consider the Q-tron also as a auto-wah. I haven’t seen a crybaby that wasn’t broken down.
PA system. I have played through the KC880 (my father has one)and those are great. You can use either a guitar or bass amp, but you really need to make sure if you use those that you stay in the frequency the speakers were designed for. With this in mind, a PA system or Keyboard amp would be your best bet. Id lean towards the Roland KC series keyboard amps because of my experience with many models and many instruments being used through them. They are workhorses.
I would try to keep the LCD out of direct sunlight for long durations. I have never seen anyone ask this question. You will have a warranty, and you can also purchase an additional manual if your keys warp, but generally I would baby it as much as possible and not keep it parked in the greenhouse.
Welcome to the forum, welcome to the Moog club, and my hat’s off to the Electronic Music community in Brazil!
Thanks a lot for the info EricK!
I’m currently with 3 EHX pedals, as I’ve said before… now all I need is an interface, probably a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2.
I’ve abandoned the CryBaby idea… it’s just plain stupid to add another “filter” to the Moog great LPF. I agree that it would sound different, but I don’t think I need it. The Q-Tron is a great pedal, but my money isn’t endless - anyway, a good tip!
This amp is extremely expensive here in Brazil. Something like U$2300 when converted. I’m planning to get a HS50M from Yamaha, what do you think?
The LCD tip is very good, I wouldn’t think of it myself.
Thanks a lot for all this free information! It’s good to be a part of a great community like this one!!
