Hi all,
There have been some reports about Editor VST causing Ableton to crash. We would love to have some more feedback from Ableton users regarding this issue (and others).

I’ve been using the VST with Ableton 9.5 (released) and 9.5b6 (Beta) without any issues, other than what has been reported with the regular editor. However, I’ve been using the stand-alone editor MUCH more than the VST directly in Ableton.
I’ll try to use the VST version more and let you know if I run into any issues.
Not had any issues with the plugin crashing ableton 9.5 64 bit on a mac.
but I will add that the way that the plugin works in ableton generates a lot of additional data passing which I could see leading to problems:
the vst is loaded after the “external instrument” instrument (which is set to midi from= moog sub 37 and audio in from the audio interface). The sub 37 is set to local keys=off

when i did a session in ableton and the sub37 editor changing some parameters within in the sub37 editor and then closing the plugin view (not muting) and reopen the the plugin view it takes some time to get back to the latest setting which is also currently running on the hardware. can this be better cached somehow? its quite a delay.
I just had ableton 9.5 os x 64 bit crash due to the vst editor 0.9.29.
I was in bank 10 with a preset loaded (5,6 or 7). I then pressed one of the other 5,6 or 7 preset buttons on the 37 and it pulled up a preset in bank 7, even though I hadn’t pressed the bank button.
every time I tried to scroll in the editor librarian’s right hand pane, it would revert back to this bank 7 preset. Pressing bank on the 37 didn’t change banks, pressing a preset button would change to that preset in bank 7 and then always revert back to showing that as I tried to scroll in the right hand pane. Then it just locked - spinning color wheel and it was a force quit job for ableton.
try this same thing using the new Sub 37 firmware v1.1.14 and see if there’s any change. Thanks!
Question…
When moving a physical knob, ableton’s “fades/device chooser” does not automatically select the parameter i am automating. It only automatically selects the parameter if i move a knob on the vst editor with a mouse. Is there something wrong here or is this just the nature of Ableton..?
I ask because in Bitwig, when i move a physical knob on the sub 37, the device automation parameter is automatically selected in Bitwig, just as when i move it with a mouse in both Ableton and Bitwig.
Also if i hover a parameter with my mouse to show the value, then move the physical knobs, the value of the knob shown in the editor does not reflect the change on the physical knob. (the 0-16838 value) BTW sometimes the value does not appear when moving it with a mouse, and other times it does

0.9.30 + 1.1.14 - Ableton crashes for me every time I try to add the editor to a second external instrument track ie I have a track with external instrument+editor, I create a second track with external instrument and try to add the editor and it crashes.
Following one of the crashes, there was no sound coming out of the sub 37 (checked via headphones) - until I moved the main output volume knob a fraction.
added: if I delete the first instance of the editor from the first track, I can open a second instance fine in the second external instrument track.
We were discussing if it would be correct to let using more than one instance of the Editor in a session. I guess if it crashes than we will finally have to limit to only one instance per session - but before that I would be interested to know what use will you make by having multiple Editor instances in a single session ?
I often have multiple midi tracks for the sub 37 in a session, which I record down to audio tracks - but if I want to go back and make changes, then it’s convenient to have the editor sitting in that specific midi track - especially if I want to see/make real-time changes with the editor. If it were single instance, I’d have to find it, close it, and then open it in the track I want at that moment.
Not life and death, but I can’t think of any plugin that I use that is limited to single instance, is there a technical reason/motivation why the sub 37 editor would be limited in this way?
Well since it may cause some issues on some environments it might be necessary to limit to one instance per session. Please note it’s not a “regular” plug-in but a controller for a hardware device, so it’s a bit different.

I’m actually using an Instrument rack in Ableton 8 and don’t remember if it’s an AU or VST.
However, thinks are fine in my setup. My use of the plug in is identical to paul_sub37’s usage.
I always create several midi tracks because I only have 2 hardware synths and so I create a lot of sounds with them.
If the editor would be limited to 1 track, it’s not very useful for me..
However, would it help if we deactivate the plugin if the midi track is no longer active? I always do that to make offline bounce possible.

I just tried opening the second editor after deactivating the first instance, but it was still an instant ableton crash job for me.
