I’m running a poly phatty chain (1 LP + 2 SP) and am kind of in need of something to smooth out the levels of the patches that I’m using. I seem to have to crank the bass quite a bit when I’m using those patches but the same volume level will destroy a small village if used on another brighter patch. I’d like to stay under $100 and am fine with using either rack gear or a pedal. What would be my best option?
$100 may be a bit of a challenge for something that can control all three Phatty’s at once…
I’m not sure if this would work with poly chain, but perhaps a programmable MIDI controller input to your LP (assuming it is the “master” for the poly chain) might work for you. You would just need something that could send the default MIDI CC value for volume (CC 7).
If you already own an iOS device, you could get a compatible MIDI interface for under $100, then add a free or inexpensive MIDI app to send the messages.
To stay “all analog”, the Moog CP-251 would be ideal! (but definitely costs more than $100…)
The four-way multiples section includes a port for an expression pedal ~
With a pedal plugged in, you could send the same variable CV signal from the other three jacks, which would be an ideal CV source for the volume CV jacks on your three Phatty’s.
Of course, volume control just barely scratches the surface of what you could do with a CP-251 and a rack of Moog analog gear…
Are you using some sort of mixer for the Phattys’ outputs? The mixer may have an AAUX bus - you could get an inexpensive compressor (like an ART or something) either on the AUX or on the mix out.
FMR RNC compressor is cheap and highly lauded as the best value out there for an analog comp. Use it as a limiter for the loud patches. But it’s probably better to resave the patches you use, all at the correct level. It’s difficult to understand where you are coming from, it sounds like you have the chain running through an eq, if its on a mixer, you could mult the outputs of the phatties, then run through different channels with different eq setttings on the mixer. There are several fixes to this issue as i see it, but It’s hard to see which is best without hearing what you are talking about.
Whoops, accidentally forgot about this post! But yes, I am using a small mono mixer for all three signals. I picked up a DBX 166A and run two channels, one for the polyphonic moog, and one for my DSI Mopho X4. It works great!
