MP 201 + midi murf as vca?

Has anyone tried using the mp 201 to send an envelope on cc7 to the midi murf to use it as a vca kind of thing? (it would actually be a midi controlled amplifier, but could serve a similar function to a vca in a fooger system, where no real vca is available)

Nobody has tried this?

I know someone has both a 201 and a midi murf. Just do it. Vco (mf102 or 107) into murf, mp 201 pitch cv to vco, mp201 env to murf cc7. Bam! fooger synth.

I got to both of these.

Obervations: manipulation of volume cc, leveraging LFO from the Multipedal, doesn’t quite shut down the volume as one would think the square wave feels a bit more rounded-corner than square, but it works.

Driving VCO CV into Freqbox works well. In my case, I added a LP (101) to the mix and added an additional MP-201 channel for envelope then a footswitch (gate) to fire the gate with a really slow decay and release. Makes for a nice effect.

But the VCO frequency (voltage drive via pedal) is a bit to wide ranging to be able to play musically with any sort of precision so I tuned the lower and upper ranges of the pedal to G and C, makes for a nice slide between.

All in all, it works quite well. And yes, I incorporated the VCA concept driven by LFO and sync’ed to Midi. Overall, pretty impressive stuff.

I wish that the original idea (VCA) was more crisp but I’m going to see what I can see what I can do to work on that.

Thanks for your reply. I just got my midi murf yesterday, and noticed that the volume does not go all the way off when turning the knob. Is it supposed to work like that? It sounds like yours functions the same way. It’d be nice if that was in the manual, I was begining to think it was either a defect, or something I did using the editor.

Seeing as the murf does not seem to fully attenuate a signal using it’s volume function, i have another idea. Using the volumes of individual slider’s as vca’s, this could work well if one could tie different filters to the same cc. Or maybe mute the filters at the end of the envelope/ unmute at the beginning.

Mine indeed functions in the same manner. Output all the way to the left and I still get a fair amount of audio out. It’s a bummer. There must be either an internal pot that can be tweaked or some way to solder something inline. Piping the audio out through a ‘true’ attenuator (on my VX-351) mutes the volume completely when turned to the left.

Maybe Amos has some ideas. As for your other msg (commanding all filter levels with a single CC) that would require code change and I think they are pretty much out of room and ability to tweak code in this thing. But if I had my choice, it would be a CC for mute and releasing mute would allow it to revert back to it’s prior level.

I can’t see any trim pots on the MMuRF board, hopefully it’s a software issue that may be resolved.

Drat… VCA or trem use-case aside, if you set output at zero, it ought to be zero IMO.
