Aside from stringing multiply reel to reels together with one tape or multihead reels ive always been stuck with single repeat delay until tonight. Im sure alot of you have figured this out along time ago but for those who havent here how i hooked it up…
needed
- mixer with FX send/return
- Reel2reel
- guitar, bass, synth, whatever instrument you play
- amp
out put from guitar or pedal board into first chanel of mixer. FX send to input of Reel 2 reel (nothing plugged into return). output of reel into chanel 2 of mixer. output of mixer into amp. set the level and eq for your guitar then make sure you mix the FX loop 100% in. now with the reel chanel set the volume equal to the 1st (or what ever your preference) and i like to eq the second chanel with more mids and treble then the 1st so it stands out more. now the fx blend knob on chanel 2 will be what controls the repeats. Be warned mixing it all the way in will result in self oscillatng feedback that can hurt your amp and ears and piss off your neighbors and pets. you may have to adjust the level on the reel to reel aswell to control distortion and feedback. you can also control delay time by slowing down or speeding up the tape speed. a cassette deck with proper ins and outs and a record feature might be substituted as well, i havent tried it but it was brought to my attention on another forum. i dont see why it wouldnt work though
and thats it, tape echo in all its glory. the best part is i didnt have to spend hundred on an old space echo or echoplex. you can probably find reel to reels at thrift stores or parents garages(where i got mine) ebay is way to expensive you might as well buy a space echo. and the mixer is just a Behringer Xenyx 802 which i think was only 50 bucks.
Enjoy!
