It really depends on how you are using the effect and what you already own. They are all so different.
I voted the delay.
It has an effects loop. Wet/Mix out. CV control of both Feedback and Time. You can really do some insane things with it! (I use a Nord G2 and a MIDI to CV converter to modulate…Multiplexers with X-fade!!!.. nothing like it in the world)
My two favorites are the delay and the ring mod. I’d recommend the ring mod, but you need to audition it first. A lot of folks hear a ring mod and have no idea what they would do with it.
The delay is a truly beautiful sounding pedal. Not cheap, but I think it is worth it.
Bryan,
I thought you were going to reccomend the Freqbox.
He’s right though, the question with the Ringmod is, do you want to go to outer space. I think its one of those effects that illicits the resoponse
"Thats an awesome effect, if thats the kind of sound ytou are going through.
I think what you should do is determine what instruments you want to run through what effects, what “modular” capabillities they have or that you are looking for. Go to youtube, the Moog products page and look for any and all demos. THen go try some out, but good luck finding them in stores depending on where you live.
If you were only going to get one fooger? What would it control?
I guess it’d be useful if you had a modular synth.
But most modulars already have the functionality of a 251.
It is, but it’s not a necessity, like the ring mod. It’s more like one of those things that you’ll use for certain effects and filtering, whereas the ring mod can be used for tremolo, bell sounds, and everything in between. It’s definitely one of the most useful 'Foogers.
The murf is great, but it is a pretty specialized piece of gear. You can certainly get a variety of sounds out of it, but I don’t think of it as being as versatile as the ring mod, low pass, or delay.
i think the bass murf is actually most the unique of all of them, building that functionality in a modular would cost a fortune and take up the whole wall too… for synths its incredibly flexible - I use it all the time. But after that I agree with the others the ringmod is fanastic and I use it all the time too… and i was really never interested in ringmods before
I also love the phaser and i certainly didn’t think I’d ever buy a phaser
least useful for me personally is the delay, its a period piece and good for sounding old fashioned but not much else - the CV control aspect is okay but never really surprising. I had two, sold one and will sell the other soon I’m sure, next to my ancient Vesta Kaza Dig420 its downright boring, maybe it sounds perfect for guitars
but the question is basically wrongheaded - these aren’t guitar pedals they are modules and point is to use the CVs get them all speaking to each other. Do what i did - buy em all and sell the ones you don’t use when you run out of cash
have you ever tried the Diamond Memory Lane 2? I ended up selling my 104z for it and have to say it goes a long way towards bridging the gap between the benefits of modern delays and the warm tone/characteristics of BBD analog delay. It’s got CV inputs for feedback and time, TAP TEMPO(!), and the best part: A dedicated modulation section w/ depth and rate (.01hz-10hz) knobs, you can get some amazing chorus-y delays reminiscent of tape warbling etc. Goes to 550ms and runs at 15v for a huge amount of added headroom too.
I really dug the 104z but my problems with it were unfortunately big enough to justify finding an alternative:
The short delay mode sounds great, but long mode is really just halving the sample rate so you get echos that are nearly incomprehensible if your program material is >C3.
Plugging a TRS cable into the time in jack screws w/ the knob range for time. Also, I’ve found that it’s pretty much impossible to get a nice use-able modulation going to it, even w/ my cp-251 cutting down the voltage from it’s own LFO to try and feed the needed voltage into the 104z, it just doesn’t play nice. I had serial #100 though, so they may have been made a bit differently by now to addr these issues.
