Moog TB15 or other amp alternatives

Hi, looking to buy a good but lightweight/ portable (i.e. carry in your hand!) amp for my theremin, and Korg MS20 (experimental playing). Need something for informal small rehearsals, not huge volumes.

I know the TB15 isn’t made anymore, but was it any good for this kind of thing, and the extreme frequencies a theremin etc can produce? If not, anyone got any recommendations etc?

As mentioned above, portability is key here.

Thanks for your input!

Oli

I’d recommend a good portable bass amplifier. These are usually real good at reproducing full range, as opposed to guitar amps which tend to accentuate the midrange. Good and portable (not necessarily cheap, though) are: Mark Bass MiniMark (about the size of a large briefcase, and the best sounding portable amp I have), and the Acoustic Image Contra (the latest models are 3 way: a nice midrange and tweeter pointing out, and a DOWNWARD firing subwoofer. Very cool!). I have both of these amps (although my Contra is a version 1 w/o the tweeter), and highly recommend both. I also play theremin and MS-20 (bought back in 1980!), along with bass guitar (4, 5, and 6 string).

I wouldn’t reccomend a bass amp for a theremin at all, the speakers simply aren’t made to handle those high frequencies, hence the title BASS AMP.

I wouldn’t even run a guitar through a bass amp. The MS20 would be fine if you are playing in the bass register. Now this isn’t to say that you can’t run these things through one and not damage it…but the speakers simply aren’t tuned to those frequencies.

Keyboard Amps on the other hand reproduce the full range (because pianos deal with Basses, Mids and Highs) so your best bet is to try to find one of those small Roland KC series. THey are small and they do indeed pack quite a punch.

For a theremin, I’d recommend the Peavey KB 2. It’s a lot lighter than the KB-3, and it should do nicely.

Thanks for that guys, some good leads to follow. A friend of mine is using some M-Audio BX5a Deluxe powered (I think) speakers for his laptop electronics set up, they make a great sound, and are gig viable - is this another avenue to follow? Oli

A powered speaker system is another route to take, as well.
