Moog Source will not stop playing

Howdy all,

I just picked up a Moog the Source and it works, but has an issue.

The owner has had it in a closet for 25 years and so, it has never been serviced.

That said, It works, both osc 1 and 2 and as I select patch 1 - 16 there must be some memory in there cause it changes tones.

However, after letting go of a key (they all work) the synth keeps playing the last note. Not at full volume but about 1/2 volume.

I have some experience in cleaning key contacts etc, a maybe soldering a bad connector or two, but the last thing I want to do is damage this old beast.

1). To open or not to open?

2). Is this common and anyone have an idea what I should be looking for?

thnx

Mark

ps I do have a good tech I can take it to.

Hello and welcome on the forum, Mark.

Best advice I can give you, considering the circumstances mentioned above, take it to that tech. If he’s competent, and you explain that this has been in storage for a quarter of a century, he should know exactly what to do with it. Mainly, cleaning all the contacts of all the internal connectors, component sockets, the keyboard contacts, and verify the ESR of electrolytic capacitors (with a specialized tool) and replace any of them that are outside acceptable readings. After doing all that, if the problem of notes hanging mid volume persist, he will probably have a look at logic gates and/or op amp in the VCA envelope section…

Good luck with it.

Alain.
