I’ve recently purchased a Doepfer MCV4 Midi to CV/Gate converter and have performed all the required steps to sync my Moog Source to my sp1200 drum machine, ie: removed jumper block from the mcv4 & connected the mcv4 gate out (tip) to the moog source s-trig in (trs).
Here’s the problem: I cannot for the life of me get the trigger sent from the sp1200 to open the gate (envelope generator, right?) on the Moog with each drum hit. I basically just want an ‘auto trig’ type effect but the Moog will only sound randomly (on the beat) here and there, rather than sounding consistently on the beat. My drum pattern contains hits on each eighth note so it should trigger the Moog to open up & sound on eighth notes too right (in-sync with the bpm)?
What the hell have I done wrong here??? Its driving me nuts!
Even when I hit the drum pads (with no pattern playing) on the sp1200, the Moog will not sound each time a drum pad is hit, but only on every second or third hit, then sometimes twice in a row, then nothing for three hits, then etc etc etc…
If my explanation is unclear, please let me know and I’ll seek to clarify my problem.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I’m keen as hell to sync it up coz, ya know, the Moog Source is the killer sound!!!
Is there a setting on the converter for V (voltage) trigs vs Moog S (switched) trigs?
I have a small Kenton and it allows the option, but it defaults to the non-Moog setting.
I didn’t know. Thanks.
Some people might want to externalize that with a switch.
Also, several Minis I’ve received for service retained their S-trig (cinch) connector, but modified it inside with the standard 1 transistor inverter circuit.
Unless verified, Moogan’s Mini might actually accept V-trigs. Never know.
The paper clip or tweezer test is easy tho. (short the S-trig connector to see if it plays.)
To Moogan, you might also want to change parameter “Trigger Polarity” on the MCV4. In the case of S-Trigger, it will reverse the moment at which the note is triggered, ie: if the envelope is triggering when a note is released instead of when it is pressed down (causing a lag), this should fix it by reversing it.
To Kevin, I think you forgot that Moogan mentioned he has a Moog Source, not a Mini ?
But thanks anyway for the info about the Minimoog, I’ll take that useful info for myself. (despite mine having MIDI now, I still like to trigger it with an S-Trigger signal from an analog drum machine sometimes.)
Btw, I didn’t post three times.
I made two edits of the same post and somehow it got posted as three separate posts.
And yeah, I screwed up thinking it was a Mini when obviously it was a Source.
