I’ve been searching the internet for some tips to solve my problem, but i have yet to find anything that works…
My moog Source has recently started buzzing. I use it to record, so i need to fix the problem. I was listening to some old recordings with it, and there is no buzz at all. I know she’s getting old and it could be a more difficult problem than i think, but does anyone have any tips on how i could remedy something like this? It’s just a strieght up buzz… Could it be a ground issue? should i get a 3 prong to 2 prong adaptor?
Can the buzz be heard from outside the source or only through the speakers?
If the former, it could be anything from a bad power supply to a leaky cap. If the latter it may only be a cold solder joint. Unfortunately, an adapter won’t help.
If it only buzzes when attached to one AC source, a device called a “ground lifter” might help.
Right now, there are too many variable to give an accurate single answer to your question.
Have your tried another cable ? Have you added anything to your system lately ? Look to see if any ac lines are running near your audio lines, or any power supplies or wall warts are near audio lines .
Does the Source have a headphone jack ? Unhook the audio out from the Source and plug a set of headphones into the headphone jack, still there ? Then it’s a good chance it’s something with the Source, not there it’s something in the audio chain after the Source. Turn everything off, then turn things back one at a time, even unplug if you have to, this way you can narrow down what is causing the problem.
It could be a long shot if nothing else work , but check to see if there are any appliances, dimmers, or even fluorescent lights on the same circuit.
Is the Source and the amp on the same circuit ? Have they always been on the same circuit, there could be a ground loop problem and a ground lifter could take care of this, but you need to be careful : ).
then again it is getting old and may have some components going up that are casing the buzz, but I’d check the above first before taking it to the shop
i forgot to mention that the buzzing is alwaysthe same volume. weather the volume knob is at 0 or 10. it’s always the same volume of buzz.
i have it running directly into a mixer and the mixer is running of a differnt power source. i’m pretty sure it’s not a cable, or power source problem.
Maybe not, but try plugging both the Source, mixer and amp into the same outlet, use a power strip if you have to. Try another input on the mixer on the off chance you have a bad channel. And for the heck of it try another cable, and again make sure no power lines have not moved and are crossing audio lines some where.
It is possible there is something electrical wrong with the Source, but try all the other trouble shooting first, if it doesn’t solve the problem. you’ll know for sure it wasn’t something “simple” to correct.
Years ago a buzz developed in my studio, turned out the power supply transformer for one of the effects box’s had moved and was crossing audio lines. Moved it and all was fine. I’m sure many others have had cables go up out of the blue
it’s just coming from the speakers. could you give me a link to a “ground lifter” so i can read up on it?[/quote]
Here are just a few…
Rolls DB25 Direct Box/Pad/Ground Lift
DOD VAC265 Stagehand Direct Box with Ground Lift
Nady DB-1 Direct Box
BBE DI-100X Active Direct Box
ART ARTcessories X-Direct Professional Active Direct Box
My advise:
first deconnect everything (!!!) from the Source.
Put the Source in a different room and plug straight in the mains and use only a headphone.
No hum/buzz: ground lop problems in your studio
Hum/buzz still present: broken Source
Please don’t disable the ground on the mains !
This might be the very last thing you do in your live.
