Moog Source backup battery

…just went south on my unit. Fortunately I have backups of the patches (my unit has MIDI Sysex thanks to the Encore retrofit)

Fortunately there’s no leaking.

Datecode indicates the battery was fabbed in 1978.

That’s thirty plus years. The Memorymoog uses the same battery, that one is getting replaced too.

Get 'em replaced folks!!!

Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever had a battery last that long  . From my Memorymoog I remember it being a 3.3 volt battery and you have to solder the leads. Reminds me that I need to check/replace the batteries in a few old synths in my studio. Cool thing on the Chroma Polaris, it uses standard C cells.

My Source got a lot of use, was always in a controlled environment, and the longest it went without having power applied was six months.

I just found out that Radio Shack sells the battery (!!)

Really, I wouldn’t exspect RS to have it. Good to know. There is a local electronics store that has or can get just abut anything but if they can’t , Radio Shack here I come.

MC:

Was the original battery soldered in? If so, did you resolder or get a battery holder?
I hear that it’s a major pain to replace a Source battery–going through the bottom and pulling the keyboard out, right?
Reason I’m asking is that I’ll be doing this soon as well, so any tips n’ tricks will be appreciated!

It’s soldered in and as big as a C cell battery. The only battery holder is glue or tie wrap.

It’s not major surgery but I would back up your patches. Also do not apply the soldering iron for too long, these batteries don’t take heat very well. Suggest you let a tech handle this one.
