hi,
i have loads of moog music made with my rogue and my voyager.
maybe i thought i could ask you other moog folks what would be the best way to present those recordings. i am not really aiming to sell my stuff (i have a regular job on the side …) but rather have interested listeners comment on the music. i am still learning about the moog and the recording process and just would like to hear others say what they think about the music i make.
what do you guys do once you finish a song you like? do you stick songs on cds and hope for someone to appreciate it? create a website? send stuff to little radio stations? throw it directly in the bin without the hassle of making a recording?
i already have a website with a hosting thing but i think somehow the music is not well presented and most of it sounds sucky, because it’s in mp3 format.
To get more exposure, I’d suggest posting a link to couple of your best efforts both here and on Squarewave (for SquareWave, use Song Links in the Links folder)
Give us a brief description of the song, the production, your influences, etc.
I know it’s still MP3 format, but at least people can hear what you’ve done, and you can judge the interest.
On ACIDplanet you can create a free artist profile and upload all the music you want. It’s a good place for synth players because of all the different genre choices…electronic, expermental, other, etc.
After creating a profile and posting music it’s easy to give links to people so they can hear (and even download) your tunes.
I have two profiles there. One is for the music I make using only a Moog Voyager and percussion. Check it out: http://www.ACIDplanet.com/smx
I was in an expierimental post-punk funkcore band, called Christmas All Year. We went to a studio to record our songs, and in the name of revolution we wanted to release the CD for free, but still let it get circulation. So we made a Myspace.com account. We posted 4 of our songs on the player so people could taste the music, and then got our whole album hosted and linked to it for people to download. We also promoted the hell out of it (in person and online). This proved very sucessful. Almost everyone in the Huntsville, AL music has heard our music, as well as the rest of Southeast, but to a lesser degree.
thanks for listening!
yeah, it’s all nice, orderly, unoffensive and canadian.
i only wish i had more tracks so i could spread stuff out a little. usually i keep 2 tracks free for a basic drum part.
i’d like to use more different sounds to get more variation.
and i am not sure about the effects. sometimes i don’t use any, other times maybe too much.
also, i am never sure improvisation is allowed at all. kind of makes you vulnerable. most music seems so programmed these days.
maybe i can come up with something less nice and more evil next time around. mwa-ha-ha-haa.
btw which niche would this kind of stuff belong into? another person said it would help to promote it if i put it into the ‘easy listening’ drawer. what do you think?
I just had a listen to the samples at the site… I love it! I would describe it as instrumental or ambient.
You could also consider making a MySpace band page. There’s a four song limit, but it seems to be a pretty popular way of finding new fans (for a band) and new bands (for fans)
i’m glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
some of those moog recordings were made with a rogue, others with a voyager. i also used to have a theremin but found it too hard to play, so i gave up.
theremin gigs are the funniest things i have ever done. someone would walk around me with a bunch of bottles or something and my careful playing was wrecked. i ended up playing new york cop siren music all night so people could walk around the edge of the performing area without ruining the sound. boy what a headache.
on another occasion people kept asking questions during the intimate show with a bunch of people. so the gig ended up being a lecture about the theremin’s history and how to play it.
i hope scientists will come up with a totally authentic uncompressed file format that renders the sound like it’s meant to be while being small enough to no junk the whole drive full of wavs.
i hope i can play live one day. (hoping for a portable new moog…)
